Junior year 2012-2013 • Take the ACT or SAT in the spring • Attend local college fairs • Meet with your counselor  • Take career, personality, and interest inventories • Create list of 6-8 colleges of interest-explore their websites • Explore your interests through job shadowing, community service, and summer programs • Begin visiting colleges-many offer special days for juniors!

Senior Year-Fall 2012 • Discuss post-high school plans with counselor • General idea of an academic area or major of interest • Attend local college fairs & presentations (Next one: October 17th at Shawnee Mission East HS 6:30-8:30pm) • Create a master list of dates/deadlines • Apply to schools on your list (reach, within reach, and back-up options)

  5. Senior Year Fall 2012 (Cont.) • Visit your tops schools again • Apply for local & national scholarships (schoology, Oharacounseling.weebly.com) • Take ACT or SAT again • College Admissions Counselors • Contact specialized departments on campus (extra-curriculars)

Senior Year-Spring 2013 • Complete the FAFSA between Jan. 1st and March 1st (fafsa.ed.gov) • Review financial aid awards from all schools • Make your decision-May 1st is National Candidate Reply Date! • Submit your enrollment confirmation materials to reserve your place • Find out when registration for classes takes place and get signed up

College Connection via Schoologyaccess code: 8Z4XC-GKTFH http://www.schoology.com/group/19075825 Students can: • Sign up for college visits • View scholarship announcements • Find out about local opportunities (i.e. workshops, shadowing, etc.) • Participate in the college give-a-way program • Upcoming deadlines

Starting the college search process… • Explore colleges based on student college ‘fit’ (i.e. location, cost, majors, size)see enclosed flyer(s) for college exploration & fit questions). • Create a list of 5-10 schools (seniors should apply to at least 3 schools). • Consider the requirements of schools (GPA/ACT min.) • Know the college deadlines (scholarship, and application). • Schedule an appointment with the school counselor to go over college plans

  9. Transcripts • Transcript release form • 18 years can sign the form, otherwise must have parent consent • Write names of schools to send transcripts to • Mr. Habel will mail, I will file a copy

College Visits • Visits occur from September-November and then again in the spring for Juniors • Sign up for these visits (on College Connection) and take advantage of the opportunity to ask questions related to their needs • Representatives are happy to help in the application process and answer very specific questions related to their school

College Fairs • Next fair is 10/17 at Shawnee Mission East High School from 6:30-8:30PM • This is a great opportunity to gain exposure to a variety of post-secondary institutions, hear about the admissions process, and get info on financial aid • Encourage students to look over the ‘Questions to ask college representatives’ form. This is helpful for fairs and when reps come to O’Hara!

Advice for parents • Attend financial aid presentations with student (in process of planning one in December at O’Hara) • Complete applications together • November-register for pin, which will help speed up FAFSA process • Go on trips to colleges together • Sit down together and prepare a list of what s/he is looking for in a college • Have regular college conversations • This can be a stressful process, try and take it one day at a time • Hug them!
