  2. Abstract Agenda and working document for ARC SC, July 2008, Denver. David Bagby, Calypso Ventures, Inc.

  3. IEEE P802.11 Architecture Committee Agenda & working document for July 2008 sessions. David Bagby, Calypso Ventures, Inc.

  4. Arc Agenda – July 2008 • Admin • Attendance • Policies • Meeting goals • Focused discussion topic: MAC block diagrams • Ref this document • Doc 08/xxxx (Darwin Engwer, Nortel) • Q&A David Bagby, Calypso Ventures, Inc.

  5. Attendance • Reminder to attendees to sign in for .11 attendance credit David Bagby, Calypso Ventures, Inc.

  6. IP policy • A SC is covered by the WG IP policy announcements. • Even though we don’t have to read the policy to SC attendees, all attendees are reminded that the policies are in effect and apply to SC sessions. David Bagby, Calypso Ventures, Inc.

  7. Arc SC – Meeting Goals • Short recap of May session • Revision of project mixture to include both existing and “future needs” activity. • Focused Discussion Topic • MAC block diagrams (mixed time frames) • Existing 2007 std • Current TG impacts • Exploratory future looking discussion • What’s “upper” and “lower”? David Bagby, Calypso Ventures, Inc.

  8. The 802.11 Arc Standing Committee: Mission • Established by the new WG Chair as a Standing Committee in May 2008 • Mission: The Arc group is tasked to discover, analyze, codify, and promote a common understanding of 802.11 architecture. • Discover: To notice or learn, especially by making an effort; Archaic To reveal or expose; • Analyze: To separate (a material or abstract entity) into constituent parts or elements; determine the elements or essential features of; • Codify: To arrange or systematize; • Promote: To help or encourage to exist or flourish; • The Arc team utilizes 802.11 members with significant expertise, experience, and history within 802.11. David Bagby, Calypso Ventures, Inc.

  9. Arc: Initial Activities (May 2008) • 1) What is the Architecture as of 802.11 2007? • Stick strictly to “what it is”, not “what do we wish it was”. • 2) What will the Arc impacts of current 802.11 TG activities? • 3) Work with SGs; which portions of 802.11 Architecture they are modifying? • 4) Contact point for 802.1 architecture liaison topics. David Bagby, Calypso Ventures, Inc.

  10. Arc: Initial Activities (Feedback from May 2008) • Attendees expressed desire to for the project mix to be • multiple, smaller, shorter duration tasks. • Include more “forward looking” activity • A suggested forward looking example: • VHT ”MAC split / reuse” David Bagby, Calypso Ventures, Inc.

  11. July: A smaller topic, for a mixed look at history and future needs • Instead of starting on project 1 (analysis of existing architecture) from May, we are going to take a single, limited architectural “chunk” topic and explore • What is it in the 2007 std? • (May Project 1 aspect) • How will current activities impact it? • (May Project 2 aspect) • SG/future future needs? • (May project 3 aspect + extapolations) • Driven by a specific example question David Bagby, Calypso Ventures, Inc.

  12. Division of Topic over Arc Sessions • Arc Session 1 • 2007 status • Current .11 activities impact • Arc Session 2 • Current .11 activities impact – cont. • Possible future needs David Bagby, Calypso Ventures, Inc.

  13. Discussion Topic Ground Rules • We are exploring - • Small group, open, honest dialog • There is no “right” or wrong”, we’re seeking shared understanding, (any debating points “scored” are not redeemable…) • Session is not oriented toward being a tutorial, discussion presumes familiarity with 2007 contents. David Bagby, Calypso Ventures, Inc.

  14. July Topic: Mac block diagrams • MAC block diagrams • Specific discussion questions: • What’s inside the block? • What’s “upper” and “lower”? • Existing from 2007 std • Current activity impacts (not in 2007) • Exploratory future looking discussion David Bagby, Calypso Ventures, Inc.

  15. MAC block diagram discussion • 2007 • Some MAC diagrams from 2007 std • Existing TG impacts • To be fleshed out via interactive discussion • SG/Future needs: What is “Upper” and “Lower”? • Presentation 08/xxx – Darwin David Bagby, Calypso Ventures, Inc.
