  2. Overview of the genre • Rock music is a genre of popular music. This type of music often has sounds of the electric guitar, and drum. Rock music often is related to the idea of rebellion and freedom.

  4. History of Rock Music Rock originally started in Rock and Roll which started in America between late 1940s to early 1950s. In 1951 the first rock and roll record was recorded by “rocket 88” and is followed by others such as “Elvis Presley” which made rock and roll very popular to the whole nation. Due to this rock and roll entered mainstream in the 1960s. In the early 1960s an period in the USA known as the “British Invasion” where British rock and roll acts entered the scene with artist such as The Beatles, Rolling Stones. With “The Beatles” releasing “I want to hold your hand” achieved to mainstream pop music. The 1960s also hold the birth of different sub genres of rock such as Pop rock, Garage rock, Folk rock, Blues rock and Psychedelic rock. This was also the time where Jimi Hendrix one of the best electric guitarist which influenced the future of rock. In the early 1970s soft and hard rock is now distinct with soft rock coming from folk rock which uses acoustic instruments and focuses on melodies. Acts such as Fleetwood Mac whose album, “ Rumours” was considered the best album of decade. Hard rock created bands such as “Queen”, “Aerosmith” and “AC/DC”. This was also where early heavy metal started.

  5. History of Rock music contd In the 1980s rock music again evolved and made early Punk rock. This was also the time where Heavy metal achieved its major recognition. Making acts such as Guns & Rose and Metallica. This was an also an age of early alternative rock which influenced acts such as Coldplay. In the late 1980s bands like “R.E.M.” and “The Smiths” has developed and put alternative rock into mainstream music. Also MTV which started in the 1980s is a key to the making of rock as one of the best mainstream music. MTV allowed bands to make videos for their music and get more fans. In the early 1990s Grunge, Britpop and Pop Punk. Britpop which is influenced by British guitar music in 60s to 70s making bands such as the Oasis, Blur and Pulp. The 1990s were also a time for the band called “Green Day” which conveyed teenage rebellion and targeted this market making a mark on the coming generations of the new millennium. Influencing bands such as Simple Plan, All-American Rejects and Fall Out Boy. Lastly in the new millennium made new contemporary bands coming up with new genres such as Emo and digital electronic rock due to the new age digital life with technology becoming advanced. The new millennium also gave a come back for Punk and Garage rock.

  6. Key artists in the making of Rock music Elvis Presley This artist started of rock as he was the first icon and image that made rock and roll. He made the genre more mainstream. The Beatles This band set out the conventions of the what bands are now. Which would consist of 4 different instruments. This band is also considered to be the most commercially successful act in rock. Jimi Hendrix This artist is considered as the best rock guitarist in the history of rock. He also influenced the whole genre of rock in general.

Key artists in the making of Rock music AC/DC This band were considered pioneers of heavy metal as they turned that genre into a more mainstream music making it become more popular Sex Pistols The Sex Pistols are the makers of punk rock which became a major cultural phenomenon giving out the first convention idea of rock as the rebellious and free restricted from societies rules. Nirvana The band which was created by Kurt Cobain which died after their 7 years of success. This band was however the major artist that laid the foundations of alternative rock which is now famous.

  8. Key artists in the last 15 years of rock Green Day This band made punk rock more popular with the new millennium teenage audience. This band gave the concept of teenage rebellion targeting a new market for rock music. Oasis This became a successful band in the last 10 years getting awards such as NME, MTV Europe awards and Brit awards. They also hold the Guinness world record as the most successful act in the last ten years. Linkin Park This band has taken rap rock and made it more mainstream in the new millennium. They came third from oasis in the most successful act in the decade.

  9. New rock artist at the moment My Chemical Romance This band started in 2001 just after Linkin parks new album in 2000. This band diverse into glam rock, gothic rock which have came from emo rock Kings Of Leon This band had been influenced by grunge rock. Even though the band was formed in 1999, they only entered the limelight of mainstream music 2003 and has entered the mainstream in Britain in 2008 with the hit “Sex on fire”. Neon Trees This is a new band that was formed in 2005. This band is mostly alternative rock. They have sold millions in 2010 as they had been signed to major label and their single shot 13 in billboard hot 100.

  10. Audience and fans of Rock music • Rock music is wide genre and has lot of cross genre and sub-genres. Making the audience as very wide ranging from all these different sub and cross genres. At the start rock music usually targeted young adults ranging from 18-30 year olds in the earlier formation of rock. However rock and roll genre targeted young women specifically Elvis Presley music. This music then did gradually turn into a more male dominated genre as their music started to grow. However in this day and age more younger audiences are starting to get targeted by rock music, at the present rock music target audience now ranges from 14-30. With mainstream rock taking the younger audiences. Genres such as alternative rock, punk rock and rap rock. This is due to more rock acts coming from all those sub-genres. • This genre music demographic would mostly be teenage young male audiences. However there is also a big amount of listeners are also female as this genre is a very wide.

  11. Major Sub-genres of Rock Pop Rock This was a fusion of rock and mainstream music. This sub genre is seen as very upbeat including artist such as Elton John, Paul McCartney, Pink, and Maroon 5 Alternative Rock This a sub genre has been created from grunge, brit pop and indie rock using all elements from those genre and sub-genre in the earlier time. This sub-genre includes acts such as R.E.M., The Cure and Nirvana. Punk Rock This rock music developed between 1974 and 1976. This sub-genre created fast hard edged music and is often political and anti-establish lyrics. Making acts such as Green day, Sex pistols and The Offspring.

  12. Heavy-metal Rock This sub-genre that developed in the 1960s to 1970s. This sub-genre was made as very loud massive sounds and high amplified distortion. Making acts such as Motorhead, Iron Maiden and Led Zeppelin. Grunge Rock This sub-genre is another sub-genre of alt rock that emerged 1980s. Its sounds create distorted sounds of the electric guitar. Making acts such as Nirvana and Green River. Rap Rock This is a fusion of rap/hiphop with rock music. This type of music created normal sounds including electric guitar, drum and bass. The only difference is that there are more faster lyrics to the song that goes with a beat. Acts such as Linkin Park, Evanescence and Beastie boys are all in the category

  13. Public Perception of Rock • The public perception of rock music is that its music is normally loud and always with a bang. It is also with convention such as the guitar and drums, bands which would normally include 3-5 members. The image is also seen to be very theatrical and crazy. Others also see it as a very rebellious genre of music. This type of music has always had mainstream appeal to the public and through out its history it has always had many listeners. This music also has a niche side to it as some of the sub genre is not very mainstream and appeal to others who look for more in rock music.

  14. Record Labels • Atlantic records – This is a famous recording label, which started in 1947 and has signed acts in rock and roll. This company was found by Ahmet Ertegun • Reprise – This record label was founded by Frank Sinatra in 1960. This was then sold to Warner Bros, which allowed the company to keep its name. This label is has acts such as Green Day, My Chemical romance, Deftones and many more • EMI – This company is one of the largest record labels in the UK. Found in 1931 and was made through a Merger of Columbia Graphophone company and Gramophone. This is home to acts such as The Beatles, 30 seconds to Mars, Blur and Daft punk.
