  2. Literary genre: a way to group books having the same or similar theme or style. There are many genres but we will look at three. Click on the genre you want to examine first: • Fantasy • Adventure • Realistic Fiction If you complete all the genres, click here

Fantasy • Type of fiction • Elements such as characters and setting could not exist in life as we know it today. • Character examples include • animals with human characteristics • magical creatures such as dragons or fairies • Settings might be • magical • other-world • Reader knows the story is not possible in the real world

  4. Examples of Fantasy • In Harry Potter, the characters have magical powers in a magical setting • Edward Tulane is a china rabbit who takes a wonderful journey in a make-believe world • Neither book could occur in the real world

They must survive together on a tiny Caribbean island where the boy gains a new kind of vision, courage, and love for his old companion. My side of the Mountain A young boy tells of his yearlong adventures living alone in the Catskill Mountains. He details his struggle for survival, his dependence on nature, his animal friends, and finally, his realization that he needs human companionship.
