  2. MISSION STATEMENT Status Employment • Moving towards, gaining and remaining in work www.statusemployment.org.uk

  3. OUR VALUES • 50% of working age disabled people not in work Disabled people are more than twice as likely than non-disabled people to have no qualifications. Status Employment will always challenge disabling attitudes to ensure that work and training opportunities are a matter of equal right. Status Employment promotes the social model of disability, which asserts that people, policy and the built environment disable individuals. www.statusemployment.org.uk

  4. Supported Employment • We have been a traditional Supported Employment agency since 1992. We originally worked with people with learning disabilities and since 1998 people receiving mental health services. The model that we work to is to a place train and support working in partnership with health professionals. www.statusemployment.org.uk

  5. PEOPLE CAN WORK – SUPPORTED EMPLOYMENT www.statusemployment.org.uk

  6. What does good employment support look like? • Supported employment or job coaching • Based on what people know works • About REAL jobs • Wages are paid at the going rate for the job, with the same terms and conditions as all other employees • The job helps the person to meet their life goals and aspirations • The role is valued by managers and colleagues • The job has similar hours and times at work as other employees with safe working conditions www.statusemployment.org.uk

  7. What does good employment support look like? Overarching guiding principle: Fundamental to supported employment is that everyone can work with the right job and the right support. Providers of supported employment should be able to offer a zero rejection policy, as everyone should have the opportunity to work and contribute to society. www.statusemployment.org.uk

  8. What does good employment support look like? • Guiding principles: • Choice and control • Partnership • Full inclusion • Rapid job search • Careers • Natural supports • Long-term support if and when required • Assistive technology • Continuous quality improvement • Right to work in a safe workplace • Protection of human rights and freedom from abuse www.statusemployment.org.uk

  9. 11. Daniel www.statusemployment.org.uk

  12. Prior to Attending Status Daniel has been in the mental health system for many years. Had not been in a permanent job for at least six years www.statusemployment.org.uk

  13. Attending Status Employment Carried out a Vocational Profile Compiled Support Strategy Carried out job search, interview techniques and mock interviews www.statusemployment.org.uk

  14. Starting Employment Daniel started work as an assistant in the Clinical Coding Department Working with Daniel’s Supervisor, Manager and Occupational Health Marriage, mortgage and promotion www.statusemployment.org.uk

  15. Employers View of Supported Employment As an employer I have found the support provided to both myself and my employee to be invaluable. If it wasn’t for Elaine’s support I am sure Daniel would have taken more sickness days. www.statusemployment.org.uk

  16. Employer’s View of Supported Employment • Also as an employer it is excellent to be able to discuss my concerns regarding Daniels well being or performance as they arise. www.statusemployment.org.uk

  17. Employers View Of Supported Employment • I am certain that without this support some people with mental health issues would struggle to hold down jobs. As an employer I don’t think we would have found it so easy to support Daniel without the structure of “supported employment” being in place. www.statusemployment.org.uk

  18. Daniels View On Supported Employment • “Elaine was more interested in helping me find the job that was suitable for me and not just forcing me into any job. I found the most suitable job for me and with the support that Elaine gave me I have been able to hold the job down for 3 years” www.statusemployment.org.uk

  19. Finding Work For People With Mental Health Issues • “No one size fits all. It is important to reassess your options. Elaine helped me do this and helped me realize I was no longer going to earn my previous salary, though with support which was invaluable it has given me confidence to gain two promotions” www.statusemployment.org.uk

  20. Stigma • “Stigma is still a big problem. The fear of being discriminated against is as real as being discriminated against. The current trend is to brandish every person with a mental health problem as a benefit scrounging layabout. It is simply not helpful. That is why the support of Elaine is invaluable by helping to educate the employers” www.statusemployment.org.uk

  21. Concerns about Disclosing • “Everything about disclosure concerned me. That is why I had chosen self employment as a way of avoiding the whole issue. My worry was that any employer would see the illness not the employee” www.statusemployment.org.uk

  22. Stress • “The NHS is a high stress environment and the work gets to everyone. My boss has said to me she wished she had an Elaine for every one of her staff. Without her supporting both me and the employer I think it would have got very complicated and messy” www.statusemployment.org.uk
