  4. summary • The heroine, Tess, is a poor but beautiful country girl. Sent by her mother to claim kindred with a more prosperous branch of the D'Urberville family, she is seduced by the young master Alec and has to return home and gives birth to an illegitimate child who dies in infancy. People's opinion forces Tess to leave home and work at a distant dairy farm. There sheets Angel Clare, son of a clergyman.

  5. They fall in love and are engaged to each other. On their wedding night, Tess and Clare tell each other about their past. On hearing Tess‘ confession, Angel can not forgive her and leaves her abruptly for Brazil. Tess meets with more misfortunes and hardship in life. Especially after her father's death, Tess has to bear the burden of supporting the whole family which drives her to ask for assistance from Alec, now a preacher.

  6. (Tess of the D'Urbervilles) Before long Angel Clare returns repentant from abroad. But Tess finds her living with Alec is really the hindrance for her to return to Angel Clare. She puts all blames of her unhappiness on Alec and kills him. Then She flees with Angel but is caught soon, tried and hanged.

  7. theme • Through the description of the tragedy of Tess, a pure woman, the novel exposes the hypocritical morality in English bourgeois society and the cruel exploitation of capitalist society in the English countryside. Hardy also seems to emphasize the significance of chance and fate in Tess' tragedy.
