Directions: Choose your own war: Scenarios For each scenario you are encouraged to be creative and develop many ideas however there are some items that you must take into consideration. • You must stay within the current President’s policy. • You must take into consideration how the Chinese and Soviet Union may react. • Consider your allies including the UN. • Don’t forget how the American Public may feel about your decision. • Take into account you weapons including your nuclear arsenal.   3. Scenario 1 • Its June 25th 1950, with the permission from the Chinese and Soviet Union, North Korea has crossed the 38th parallel in an attempt to unify the peninsula under communism. What should the U.S. do? Truman sent weapons and troops. The United Nations voted to send forces (Russia was not involved in the U.N.) American began drafting its young men. General MacArthur was given the command. Maps Directions

  4. Scenario 2 • It’s the summer of 1950 and things are not going well for the American and UN troops. Pressure is starting to mount on Truman and people are starting to ask why we are fighting. Truman plans to address the nation and want your ideas on what should be included in his speech. We hate war but we love our liberties, we will not see them destroyed. Do you feel that North Korea’s attack on South Korea was a threat to the U.S.? Why? Why not? Maps Directions

  5. Scenario 3 • Its September 1950, American and UN troops are trapped in the south east city of Pusan. What are your options? If you retreat how do you explain this defeat to the rest of the world? If you decide to stay and fight what is your strategy? Use the maps. MacArthur lead a daring attack high up on the coast of South Korea behind the Communist forces. The attack was very successful and changed the look of the war. Maps Directions

  6. Scenario 4 • Its October of 1950, the attack at Inchon was a smashing success. Truman is now confronted with a difficult decision, should we cross the 38th parallel and take the war to the enemy or should we stay and defend the 38th and contain communism at that location? We crossed and changed the war from a defensive war to an offensive war. Do you think that this was a mistake? Why? Why not? Maps Directions

  7. Scenario 5 • It is November of 1950 and General MacArthur has requested permission to fly into Chinese airspace and attack the retreating North Korean air force, what is your decision? Truman instructed MacArthur not engage with Chinese or fly into their airspace. Maps Directions

  8. Scenario 6 • It is the spring of 1951, a lot has happen since Truman has called upon your advice. Red China has crossed the Yalu and is now involved in the fighting. American and UN troops were forced to retreat back over the 38th over the winter. MacArthur launched a spring offensive in 1951 and was successful. However he has put Truman in a very difficult position. The General has disobeyed the President’s orders and has publicly announced that he will invade China. What should the President do about the popular General? Truman FIRED MacArthur!! Maps Directions

  9. Scenario 7 • It is 1953 and you are now working for President Eisenhower, he has a different policy called Brinksmanship. He has ordered you to come up with a method to end the stalemate in Korea. Eisenhower threatened to attack North Korea and China with nuclear weapons. Maps Directions

Korean War Today Cease fire continues Over a million North Korean troops are on the border, 38,000 U.S. are on the border- making the North Korean- South Korean border the heaviest guarded border in the world. The unpredictable and unstable leader of North Korean is named Kim Jung IL, he is the son of Kim IL Sung. North Korea is still communist and is still supported by China. North Korea continues to threaten war and is currently working toward making a functional nuclear weapon North Korea has conducted test of long range rockets by firing over Japan and near Hawaii and Alaska, some experts think it is only a matter of time before they would be able to hit California.
