Phases

  • Rain, plants, animals, and factories put nitrogen into the soil.

  • Bacteria converts organic nitrogen (plants and animals) into plant-useable ammonium.

  • Bacteria converts ammonium into plant useable nitrate.

  • Plants take up nitrate and ammonium.

  • Bacteria convert nitrates back into atmospheric nitrogen through denitrification.

  • Leaching moves nitrates below the root zone and out of the cycle.

  • Runoff is produced by waste that is not soaked into the ground.
