  6. Track Dimensions All track dimensions include ±0.25” tolerance. ME 2110: Creative Decisions and Design Prof J.Rhett Mayor

  7. Centerpiece Dimensions All track dimensions include ±0.25” tolerance. The surgical robot design must be robust to variations ME 2110: Creative Decisions and Design Prof J.Rhett Mayor

  8. Key Info and Competition Details • Read handout for details and complete rules • Your team will be given electronics/actuators kit • Total budget for other supplies is $100 • Machines must start in a 12”x24”x18” volume • Rulings by Instructors/TA’s are final and binding ME 2110: Creative Decisions and Design Prof J.Rhett Mayor

  9. Key Events & Dates • Individual Competition (week 8 (10/11)) • Preliminary Round (week 10 (10/25)) • Qualifying Round (week 11 (11/1)) • Big Contest - Friday, November 11, 2011 • Design Review, 5 - 6 PM • Surgical Robotics Trial6:15PM • Final Written & Oral Reports (week 13 (11/15)) ME 2110: Creative Decisions and Design Prof J.Rhett Mayor

  10. Individual Round • Make primary incision • Repair Detachment Site • Locate and reattach implant With the implant reattachment site stationary, perform: Task 1 – Make primary incision • Manual start with single-action trigger • Gravity and 3 mouse-traps only • Max. 5 minutes • Run your machine three (3) times ME 2110: Creative Decisions and Design Prof J.Rhett Mayor

  11. Preliminary Competition • Make primary incision • Repair Detachment Site • Locate and reattach implant • With the rescue zone rotating, perform: • Task 1 – Make primary incision • Task 2 – Repair Detachment Site • No penalties • Computer controlled with automatic start • 5 minutes to run your machine three times • 2% of course grade • Your score will be ranked only against teams in your studio section. ME 2110: Creative Decisions and Design Prof J.Rhett Mayor

  12. Qualifying Competition • Your team’s machine will compete against other machines in all aspects of the design challenge. • You will compete several times during the studio period against a variety of opponents. • The results from this qualifying round will be used to seed the brackets for the final tournament. ME 2110: Creative Decisions and Design Prof J.Rhett Mayor

  13. Contest Grade Scoring • Based on number of wins • Top team(s) = 9 pts. • Teams with 0 wins = 1 pt. • …Linear interpolation ME 2110: Creative Decisions and Design Prof J.Rhett Mayor

  14. Grading Summary • 5% of Course Grade is from Design Review • 15% of Course Grade is from Performance ME 2110: Creative Decisions and Design Prof J.Rhett Mayor

  15. ME2110 Design Competition • Your machine will compete in two events: • a) Design Review: • Starting at 5:00pm a panel of judges will perform a design review of your rescue robot design. You will need to describe your machine quickly and clearly to the judges that visit your machine. The judges will score your machine on aesthetics, ingenuity, and presentation. • b) Autonomous Surgical Robotics Trials: • Your machine will compete against other machines to achieve the best score. The top two scoring machines in each contest will be declared winners. • The contest will be a double elimination tournament for the initial rounds, and then single elimination for the later rounds ME 2110: Creative Decisions and Design Prof J.Rhett Mayor

  16. ME2110 Design Competition • The main design project is a 6 week, constrained resource (<$100) team engineering design project • Design, build and test an autonomous device that must perform multiple tasks of varying complexity • Competition tasks are constructed to create an under-constrained design problem based on a main theme • Cargo Crisis: Pirates of the Horn • Oil Spill Crisis • Repeatability is critical: ~10 consecutive wins required to win the competition ME 2110: Creative Decisions and Design Prof J.Rhett Mayor

  17. Previous Machine ME 2110: Creative Decisions and Design Prof J.Rhett Mayor

  18. Previous Machine ME 2110: Creative Decisions and Design Prof J.Rhett Mayor

  19. ME 2110: Creative Decisions and Design Prof J.Rhett Mayor

  20. Important Things To Do • Read Handout Carefully • Read it Again • Get Started Early • Learn From Others • Don’t Be the Weak Link • Work consistently • Have Fun • Go for the Win! ME 2110: Creative Decisions and Design Prof J.Rhett Mayor
