  9. Populists:Vocabulary

  10. conservative Less willing to use government to solve social and economic problems

  11. status quo Things the way they are right now

  12. liberal More willing to use government to solve social and economic problems

  13. reform Change, make things better

  14. mortgage Loan secured, or backed-up with property. If the loan is not paid the property is lost

  15. platform Major ideas/plans of a political party

  16. plank The specific ideas that make up a political party’s platform

  17. suffrage The right to vote

  18. referendum A direct vote in which all voters either accept or reject a proposal; “ballot question”

  19. recall Power of voters to remove elected officials from office

  20. initiative A proposal placed on the ballot as the result of a petition

  21. pragmatism Philosophy that tests ideas by putting them into action; if the first idea doesn’t work, try another one

  22. free trade Absence of tariffs and other trade barriers

  23. gold standard Every paper dollar is worth a specific amount of gold

  24. proportional tax Everyone pays the same Percent; “flat tax”

  25. progressive tax The more one makes, the higher your taxes; “Graduated tax”
