L1 Coherence Review Chris Dillon
Reasons for review • Following ELQ and widening participation agenda • Consider L1 provision within OU’s strategic direction • Does L1 curriculum meet needs of students? • How were students attracted and supported in L1? • How to maximise retention and progression?
L1 Review has proposed: • Set of L1 course categories: gateway; core introductory, core additional; short. • Each category has a set of properties, support etc. • Set of ‘baseline’ skills for entry into core introductory • Set of skills for entry to level 2 • All undergraduate qualifications should have 60pts at L1 • Students should start at L1 – very strong recommendation
Some questions • Should there be a similar review for L2 and L3? • A programme-based view of curriculum design • Flexibility? Choice? A more structured curriculum? • Does the undergraduate levels framework need to change?
