  3. When do we use question tags? • when we know and are certain about sth • reconfirm what we understand • when we expect others to agree with us (use falling intonation) = fall of the pitch of voice in speaking  affects meaning of what is said • when we ask questions or check information (use rising intonation)

  4. What are the forms? • After statements, not questions • Small questions comes at the ends of sentences • You are a bad man, aren’t you? • ‘Aren’t you’: • the question tag after the statement • the small question at the end of the sentence

  5. Positive (affirmative) statements: + or - ve tags It’s hot, isn’t it? Negative statements: + or - ve tags It isn’t hot, is it?

  6. Remember to use the verb in the statement to form the verb in the question tag • principal auxiliary verbs • modal auxiliary verbs • If there is no auxiliary verbs, what can we use?

  7. If you request for sth, what is the question tag we can make? • -ve? • +ve?

  8. How can reply to question tags? • Use the verb in the statement • e.g. Ronald doesn’t like smoking, does he? No, he doesn’t. Peter likes music, doesn’t he? Yes, he does.

  9. Important points (TB p30) • What is the question tag for “Let’s”? • Auxiliary verb? • Shall / will • Pronoun? • We / you • e.g. Let’s go, ___________? • Let’s go, shall we / will you?

  10. After imperatives, when do we use ‘won’t you?’ • ask or order people to do things • e.g. • Do sit down, won’t you? • ask sb to sit down immediately • Shut up, can’t you? • ask sb to stop talking at once

  11. After imperatives, when can we use ‘will / would / can / could you?’ • request or invite people to do things • e.g. • Give me a hand, will you? • invite sb to help you • Open a window, would you? • invite / request people to open the window
