Efficiencies in Waste Collection

Presentation Transcript
Town of Jackson…is one step ahead • Contracted Service • Increased security • More efficient • Less expensive • Greater customer service • Less confusion • Allows for automated collection (carts) • Subscription Service • Insecure • Inefficient • Expensive
Collection Changes • No Bagged Recycling • Bagged recycling causes maintenance issues at the recycling facility • Place all recycling in a reusable container or tote • Reusable containers cannot be over 33 gallons in size & weigh more than 30 lbs when set out for collection • Do NOT bundle & tie or bag any materials • Use brown paper bags to keep items from blowing on windy days
Proposed Changes • Biweekly recycling service • Increase in recycling tonnages • Decrease in landfill tonnages • Increased customer service • Recycling trucks are to large to accommodate narrow roads & private drives • Consistent with industry norms • Elimination of clear bag ordinance • Confusing to new residents • Inconsistent enforcement • Most who will comply are doing so now
Stretched too thin… Subscription Service inefficiencies: • 25 options for garbage collection • 25 options for recycling collection • 1900 invoices/month • Paper • Time • Postage • Trucks passing each other on route • Few pickups with a lot of miles = high costs • Discontinuing out-of-county residential collection
Future Considerations • Curbside Carted Collection for ALL Adams Communities • County will contract for collection services (public/private?) • Lower prices to residents • Improved collection fleet • Improved routing • Improved education • 95 gallon garbage & recycling carts will be provided • Easy to use • Holds large amounts of material • Keeps litter and pests under control • Improves customer service • Long term contracts get better pricing and interest
