Welcome PARENTS/GUARDIANS/FAMILY MEMBERS • It takes ALL of us working together to keep our children/pre-teens/teens/young adults safe. • Some of us are first-generation and some of us are second-generation raised with the Internet as a part of their everyday lives. • The worst technology they will see is what exists right now. • Our children know more about the Internet than we do; however, we cannot assume they know how to use it safely!

  3. Goals • To understand what our children are doing online • To keep our children safe when they’re online • To teach our children to make smart choices when they’re online • To start a discussion about Internet safety that we continue with our families and others beyond tonight

  4. How Children Get Online Mobile devices, including cell phones Laptops and personal computers Tablets, such as iPads Video game consoles Their own device or a friend’s device At other’s houses Free WiFi

  5. What Children Do Online • SOCIAL MEDIA!!!!! • Visit virtual worlds • Play multiuser games • Text or instant message • View and post videos • Download music, movies, and more • Create and upload art • Do research/homework, etc.

  14. Keep Personal Information Private • Never reveal: • Name (may be hard to do) • Address • Phone number • School name • Don’t post or send photographs of yourself. (realistic? inappropriate…) • Choose a nondescript screen name. • Ask to see communication and point out what you can learn from it.

  15. Learn How To Use Privacy Settings • Become familiar with the websites your child visits. • Visit them regularly yourself. • Read privacy policies. • Settings should be “private.”

  16. If a Stranger Contacts Your Child • Make sure your child knows: • Don’t respond • Contact an adult right away • Block the offender • Notify the authorities, if warranted. • Notify CyberTipline www.cybertipline.com

Basic Ways To Keep Your Child Safe • Talk and Discuss…don’t be afraid of this • Learn as much as you can • Sign an “Internet Safety Contract.” • Keep the computer in a public area of your home. • Set a time limit for computer use. • Become familiar with the sites your child visits. • Know your child’s online “friends.” • Know your child’s passwords. • Keep your security software up to date. • Keep aware of what is popular and visit those sites.

Basic Internet Rules for Children • Never give out identifying information. • Never write or post anything you wouldn’t be comfortable with the whole world seeing. • Treat others online as you would treat them in person. • Never share your password. • Never open an email or click on a link from someone you don’t know. • Never download or click on anything without checking with a trusted adult first. • If you make a mistake, COME TELL ME! I will not be mad at you!
