Lesson 12-5Pages 538-541 Surface Area of Cylinders
What you will learn! How to find the surface area of cylinders.
What you really need to know! The surface area S of a cylinder with height h and radius r is the sum of the areas of the circular bases and the area of the curved surface.
Example 1: Find the surface area of the cylinder. Round to the nearest tenth.
Example 2: A poster is contained in a cardboard cylinder that is 10 inches high. The cylinder’s base has a diameter of 8 inches. How much paper is needed to wrap the cardboard cylinder if the ends are to be left uncovered?
Diameter = 8 inches, then the radius = 4 inches. Height = 10 inches.
