  1. Application of Information and communication technology In library Presented by Mrs. RajinderKaur Gill & Mr.ashokkumar rajinder18gill@gmail.com

  2. Introduction: At one time libraries were considered as a storehouse of books. But now the concept of Libraries has changed altogether due to advent of information and communication. The world of ICT is changing at very fast pace & convergence of Information and communication technology has made huge impact on Libraries. The activities which were carried out manually in libraries, with so much pain & strain are being carried out smoothly with help of ICT. Information and communication technology has enlarged the scope of acquisition, processing organization and dissemination of information. The new development in ICT have opened many gates of wisdom like Internet, Digital library, Virtual libraries, E-consortium & E-books/journal etc. The E-mail and social networking sites has opened wider interaction among people & professionals

  3. Information and communication technology: 1. ICT is broad term in field of information technology that include all technologies i.e. computer, CD/DVDs, Telephone, RFID, Barcode, Mobile phones, Radio, Internet, DBMS, Networks technology & Multimedia technologies etc. 2. One of the most relevant outcomes of ICT is the introduction of advanced communication networks or Internet which has shift the role of libraries from ownership model to access model, from print to electronic media, from information collection to information analysis & repackaging. 3. As Information is a fundamental resource which is essential for survival in today’s competitive world, But there is no value of Information, if it is not communicated to the right user at right time in right pace. It can be done only with help if ICT 4. It has changed the conventional method of writing & typing into Word Processing, Text editing, Character recognition & voice recognition. 5. It has changed the conventional method of classification and cataloguing into electronic information storage & retrieval process, A I & Expert System.

  4. Application of ICT in Libraries: Application of Information and communication technology House keeping Library Information Library Users Building operations Administration Storage & Networking services Digital/Virtual Retrieval collections

  5. House keeping operations: It means performing all activities/operations of library with help of computer. In simple words to make use of ICT to library operations, such as acquisition, cataloguing, classification. There are several areas of library automation:- ACQUISITION TECHNICAL PROCESSING CIRCULATION CONTROL SERIAL CONTROL

  6. Administration: The Computer play a significant role in effective administration of a library. The following are the major areas of administration where computer is used Management support Accounting/Budgeting records Maintenance of records Library Statistics

  7. Information storage & retrieval: It is the systematic process of collecting and cataloging data so that they can be located and displayed on request. Computers and data processing techniques have made possible the high-speed, selective retrieval of large amounts of information. There are several basic types of information-storage-and-retrieval systems.  Document-retrieval systemsstore entire documents, which are usually retrieved by title or by key words associated with the document. Database systemsstore the information as a series of discrete records that are, in turn, divided into discrete fields (e.g., name, address, and phone number); records can be searched and retrieved on the basis of the content.

  8. Library Networking Services: On the one hand the cost of document and demands of users are increasing and on the other hand the library budgets are shrinking. This has forced libraries to make efforts toward Library Resource sharing.. The technology of computers and communications enable librarian to share data about recent acquisition, with other libraries. In technical terms the whole process is called as Networking. Now a days, there are several networks Have come up in International and National level, like OCLC INFLIBNET, RLIN, JANET, DELNET, BONET etc. Through this networks Libraries can share their resources and services with other libraries to fulfill the maximum demands of their users.

  9. User Services: Document Delivery Service  Interlibrary loan services: Current awareness service Selective dissemination of Information:  Internet Services:  Xerox/Fax services:

  10. Building Digital/Virtual Collection: The advancement of ICT has demanded new form of library and information service to get more and more user satisfaction. So libraries, are going toward Digitization. A Digital/Virtual library is a library in which collection is stored in digital format and accessible by Computer. The digital content may be stored locally, or accessed remotely via computer networks.

  11. Conclusion: The application of ICT in libraries has increased its productivity & quality in both work as well a in services. To keep pace with the development, libraries need to redefine & reevaluate their roles to make best use of ICT to satisfy their users need. Utilization of ICT in libraries is optimistic to gain right information at right time to right user at right cost. So, ICT has broken worldwide boundaries to provide better services to its users.
