Joint Skills Committee • Advisory committee to the boards of SDS and SFC – advice grounded in robust evidence • Broad membership • Employers, NUS, University/College/Training Provider reps, NUS, SQA, Economist, Academic, Enterprise Agencies, UKCES • Areas of focus include • A developed workforce, employability, youth employment, skills utilisation, the evidence base • Activities include • Skills Investment Plans; Regional Skills Assessments • Skills utilisation projects,Learning to Work 2 • Outcome agreements

SFC and Learning to Work 2 • A continuation of Learning to Work 1 (4 years of funding from 2007) • Scottish Government priority to ‘further enhance employability and skills’ • Access to work-related learning and placements, enterprise education and entrepreneurship and workforce development all priorities of strategy • Project benefits students (enhanced employability) and employer (improved organisational development) as well as work-related course delivery

  5. Where are we now with Learning to Work 2? • Projects ending in summer 2013/summer 2014 • Way forward determined by future outcome agreements and a full and independent evaluation of LTW2 placement projects and the strategic role of SHEEF • Evaluation to highlight how placement programmes can be extended and embedded in curriculum • Final evaluation to go to Joint Skills Committee with options on whether/how placement programmes can be extended and sustained.

  6. SFC Expectations Beyond Learning to Work 2 • Graduate Skills: Exposing students to business methods and practices and increasing numbers of work-related placements • A Developed Workforce: Increasing employment rates and scope/breadth of employer engagement in curriculum • Right Learning in the Right Place: Prioritising courses to respond to employer skills needs
