Applying the labs to your classes • Labs go straight into D-Level lab Sciences • Aligned with Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards • No need for a course number change • Use one or all of the labs – there is no minimum requirement • The curriculum is free: www.haspi.org • The supplies needed are listed in the teacher guide and you can obtain the supplies as you normally would for your lab • Some Curriculum Lab Kits are available to purchase* *supplies are limited

  3. New Lab Overview • The new labs have been developed to align with NGSS and fit into any chemistry course. • Take a look at your handout to see the new labs. If you have questions about the labs, please email Jewyl at MedChem@HASPI.org • She will be happy to answer questions or help with implementation.

  4. Depending on how your district adopts NGSS you will see some earth and bio standards in your list of things to teach. The new labs address some of these life and earth standards whenever possible in order to help with NGSS implementation.

  5. 6c Photosynthesis & Respiration • One example of a lab activity that addresses the life science standards is 6c, on photosynthesis & respiration. • Take a look in your handouts and you will find a background on the energy crisis of nutrition. • The application worksheet that goes with it brings together much of the energy concepts into a review. You will see the key on the next slide. • This is a great way to spiral the biology concepts into chemistry! And this requires no lab materials.

  8. You will find both the pdf and Word versions. For some labs there are additional files as needed.

  9. Teacher guides include the lab overview, NGSS connections, supplies needed and where you may order them, setup directions and best practices tips.

  10. 6a Calorimeter Design Project Students read about biomedical engineering and learn to engineer their own equipment. First they test a number of devices to see what makes a good insulator Each lab team designs their own calorimeter to see how effective it is. They must work around cost constraints as outlined in the NGSS engineering standards. This calorimeter can then be used for all calorimetry labs in the energy unit! View Lab 6a (need web access)

  14. 6b: Hot Pack Calorimetry View lab 6b (need web access) • You will need • Calorimeter • Thermometer • 1 baggie of crystals (hydrate) • 1 baggie with a powder or pellet (anhydrate) • Graduated cylinder • Water Follow the directions for Lab 6a in your handout!

New Lab Kit Overview • At the end of the lab summary you will see a table marking which labs are in the mini kit if you received one last spring, and which are in the larger kit that will come out in January. • HASPI is no longer making full kits. The kit that comes out in January will offer 10 labs, but after that you will be able to order each lab individually so you can choose what works best for your school budget.
