Effects of Lower Hybrid power application on edge/SOL turbulence

  • There is an anomalous decrease in the penetration of the LH waves as the density is raised above ~0.7x1020 m-3.
  • Reflectometry and GPI observations show that the outboard SOL is (strongly) affected by the LH.
  • The GPI observations imply that fluctuations in the outboard SOL are DECREASED with the LH. Effects of LH on the inboard edge are small.

Inboard SOL GPI sigs

  • Plan:
  • - examine fluctuation changes vsne, PLH
  • & phasing
  • - make simultaneous GPI and
  • LH-reflectometrymeasurements in
  • order to examine the consistency of SOL ne changes and ionization
  • implied by GPI signals
  • - quantify difference between outboard and inboard changes on GPI signals
  • should be done piggy-backed on LH runs, though GPI gas puff is needed

the LH clearly ionizes gas in the outboard SOL

apparently decreases the fluctuations (turbulence?) significantly

effects on inboard SOL are small
