Study Group with Industry Week-long workshop, where teams of mathematicians and other researchers with advanced mathematical expertise (engineers, computer scientists, physicists) solve industrial problems “Industry” - any activity of social or economic value Initiated in Oxford University in 1968. SGs in other countries with support from Oxford & the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry (ECMI), a Pan-european network/consortium of universities and companies Numbers: Regular SGs in >14 countries, organised in 26 countries, >600 problems from >350 organisations- SMEs, large companies, hospitals, government (other sciences) Why? One of the most effective practices worldwide for academia-industry collaboration

Mathematics for Industry Network MI-NET is funded by the EU (COST Action TD1409) – founded in 2015 Facilitates widespread application of mathematics to all industrial sectors through a range of initiatives: Study Groups with Industry, Industrial Days, Short-Term Scientific Missions, and networking 31 countries - currently the largest international network in industrial mathematics: 2 experts from each country, including some of the most influential in the field of industrial mathematics (CY members: K. Kaouri, M. Zachariou) www.mi-network.org The Annual meeting of MI-NET has taken place in CUT today with participation from 27 countries

The four problems for ESGI125 • ENGINO (SME): Increasing the creativity of ENGINO toy sets and generating automatic building instructions • Party Ice (SME): Cost optimization of ice distribution • Water Development Department (government): Germasogeia aquifer challenges • Transportation Organisation of Nicosia District –OSEL (large company): Improving the bus routes in urban Nicosia 30-minute presentations, 2-4pm today

Outcomes and the “after” Day 5 presentations: • Preliminary Results (what does/doesn’t work) • A (better) problem formulation • Sometimes novel mathematics and research After the ESGI: • Each team writes a report (in 3 months). Delivered to the company and deposited at the international Study Group database (http://miis.maths.ox.ac.uk/) • Team decides whether the report can be converted into a peer-reviewed publication. • Assess, investigate and launch long-term collaborations between the universities and the companies (who in Cyprus?)

  13. Filter coffee brewing (Philips) The challenge: While carrying out tasting experiments Philips researchers noted a correlation between the final shape of the coffee bed and the taste of coffee. Can we explain this using mathematical modelling? • Irish ESGI (2012): Initial mathematical model and that quantified the coffee brewing process in relation to two parameters: • The size of coffee grains • Fluid flow on and through the grains • Transferred knowledge from mathematical models used in hydrology and geology to understand the effect of rain, river flow and glaciers on the soil’s morphology • Long-term collaboration: With the Mathematics Applications Consortium for Science and Industry (MACSI) in Ireland

Objectives and vision • Establish the Study Group with Industry as an annual event in Cyprus • a CUT/CY/Mediterranean Centre for applications of Mathematics in Industry and Other Sciences, with support from international experts • Identify and solve industrial and societal problems all year roujnd using a range of mathematical methodologies • Promote interdisciplinary collaboration • Demonstrate the value of mathematical sciences to the public!

Benefits for researchers • Journal publications that can arise from the results of the Study Group. • Long-term collaborations with companies: MSc and PhD joint projects, industrially-funded research projects, joint research proposals to the RESTART and Horizon2020 programmes, etc. •  Networking and collaborations with other academics in Cyprus and abroad • For PhD students and non-permanent academics a great opportunity to get acquainted with the market and possibly secure a job offer.

Companies: ways to be involved Propose a problem for the Study Group Why? • Access to a low-cost, high-gain academic “think-tank” • Access to a pool of senior international experts • Identify good employees – headhunting PhD students • Be a pioneer in academia-industry collaboration in Cyprus through a well-tested format

Some logistics • One room has been allocated for each challenge in this building – you can find outside each room the name of the company and you can choose which problem to join. • A welcome reception will be held in the foyer at 18.30 with wine and finger food and you are all very welcome. • The shuttle will leave from outside the building, in Andreas Themistokleous street, just outside, to go to the Poseidonia Hotel at 8pm. Tomorrow a shuttle will depart at 8.30am from the hotel to bring you again to the same position in Andreas Themistocleous street. • The ESGI participants can find the wifi code in the booklet in their welcome packs.
