1. Bible Summary - Job • The tale of Job could have been written at any time in any century • It is a story of the battle for men’s minds, the battle between good and evil • It is a story of faithfulness and dependence on God in the face of adversity

Bible Summary - Job • Job, a rich man, lived in the land of Uz • He feared God and shunned evil • One day the angelscame to present themselves before the Lord, and Satanalso came with them.  • God tells Satan there is no one more faithful on earth than Job • Satan challenges God to prove this and do so without actively protecting Job.

Bible Summary - Job • Satan takes everything from Job , using raiders to kill his servants and take some livestock, fire to kill more of his livestock and a great wind to kill his children • Still Job did not blame God for his loss. • Now Satan afflicts Job with sores • Even Job’s wife turns and tells Job to curse God • Still Job did not blame God

Bible Summary - Job • Three of Jobs friends, Eliphaz the Temanite, Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite, come to visit and on seeing his plight hold a long discussion with him. • They sat on the ground with him for 7 days and 7 nights. No one said a word to him, because they saw how great his suffering was. • Then Job makes a very depressing speech bewailing his lot.

Bible Summary - Job • Eliphaz tries to comfort and encourage him but in doing so shows he does not really understand the ways of God • Job replies explaining how desperate his plight is and how much he has lost but does not blame God only asks him why this has happened to him • Bildad now has a go at trying to explain things to Job and encouraging him with the words • Surely God does not reject one who is blameless    or strengthen the hands of evildoers.21 He will yet fill your mouth with laughter    and your lips with shouts of joy.22 Your enemies will be clothed in shame,    and the tents of the wicked will be no more.

Bible Summary - Job • Job shows his faith and respect in his reply although still very depressed by events • Zophar attempts to put forward reasons for Job’s predicament • Job simply says he knows as much as his friends but still does not understand why all this has happened to him. But does not blame God • To God belong wisdom and power;    counsel and understanding are his.14 What he tears down cannot be rebuilt; those he imprisons cannot be released.

Bible Summary - Job • Job tells his friends • I have heard many things like these;    you are miserable comforters, all of you!(Ch16) • Thus the saying “Job’s comforters” • The long discussions continue but still Job will not say anything wicked • Job seeks wisdom, instead of the tirade from his former friends and he longs for the days when God watched over him and no longer wants to be an outcast

8. Bible Summary - Job • The son of one of his friends then begins to deride Job • God then intervenes telling Jobs friends he is angry with them for not speaking the truth as Job had done. • God tells them to go to Job and ask Job to pray for them and he will forgive them • God then blesses the remainder of Job’s life making him rich and allowing him to live to a ripe old age and see 4 generations of his family • Job grants both sons and daughters an inheritance , most unusual in that day
