  4. What is User Centered Design? • A design philosophy and approach • Puts the user at the center of all design decisions • Empowers users and motivates them to learn and explore new system solutions

  5. Key Aspects of UCD • Early focus on users, tasks and environment • The active involvement of users • Research exercises with intended users of a system • Iterative Design whereby a prototype is designed, tested and modified

  6. Iterative Design • Design methodology where design should be done in repeated cycles where, in each cycle, the design is elaborated, refined, and tested, and the results of testing are carried over into the design focus of the next cycle

  7. Steps in Iterative Design • Gather project requirements • Complete an initial interface design • Present the design to several test users • Note any problems had by the test user • Refine interface to account for/fix the problems • Repeat steps 2-5 until user interface problems are resolved
