Voice cloning startup Respeecher working with Hollywood studios offers their technology in pro bono project to support actor Michael York's amyloidosis awareness campaign. Michael Yorku2019s illustrious career extends over 50 years in film, theatre, radio plays, and more recently in voiceover narration for audiobooks, documentaries, and animation. Respeecher created an AI model to match the source voice with Yorku2019s target voice, using raw data from the animated filmu2019s original recording session from long ago.   3. About10yearsago, however, York’shealth begantosufferfrombonemarrowcancer andanunder-diagnosedconditioncalled amyloidosis. Thisrarediseaserepresents oneclassinagrowinglistofprotein misfoldingdisorders. Oneofthecommonsymptomsof amyloidosis, though, isswellingofthe tongue, whichmakesitmoredifficultto speakclearly. Yorksaidinaninterviewatthetime: “Ilost myvoicecompletely. Which, foranactor, is abitalarming. Nowit’ssortofback." 03

  4. Withhishealthrecovering, Yorkofferedhisvocaltalentforanonprofiteducationalinitiativetopromote awarenessofamyloidosis. Ashortanimatedfilmwasproducedtohelpphysicians, medicalstudents, patients, andtheirsupportnetworktobetterunderstandandcarefortheinsidiousdisease. Thoughhis narratorvoicebythenwassomewhatraspy, York’sspiritnonethelessshinedthroughandhearkened backtohisgoldenvoiceofyesteryear. 04

  5. Withinthelastyear, becausemedicineandsciencearecontinually improving, itbecamenecessarytoupdatetheanimatedfilmwithnew dialogue. Initially, thenonprofitteamhopedtorecordYork’sadditionalvoiceover tomaketheedits. Butitquicklybecameclearthatthenewaudiowas notgoingtobeaneffectivematchwiththeoriginalnarration. Aswell, therewasnoviableprospectoffindinganotheractorwhocould impersonateYork’suniquevocalquality, especiallyintheproduction timeavailable. And, ofcourse, existingtext-to-speechsoftwarecertainly wouldnotbeabletomimicYork’ssignaturetoneandcadence. 05
