In AP classrooms, the focus is not on memorizing facts and figures. If you do well enough on the AP exam, you may be eligible to earn college credit

Why take AP? • Earn college credit • Save time and money • Impress • Enhance • Learn history 2) If you score a 3,4, or 5 on the Exam next May, your college may grant you college credit. 3)colleges, family, friends, teachers, peers and yourself. AP level study is challenging and difficult, but very worthwhile. 4)thinking, writing and inquiry skills in the more challenging AP environment and become a better student and learner 5)at a deeper, more memorable and meaningful level

My Goals for you and the class • Prepare you to do well on the AP United States History test • Learn history at a deeper and more meaningful level. • Enhance your study, learning, thinking and discussion skills & demonstrate these in class • Become a better student and prepare for the rigorous and challenging courses that you will encounter in college.

More Goals • Become a educated citizen who can think and make connections about events (past and current alike), and will participate intelligently our democracy (vote, serve on a jury) . • Have a positive learning experience and gain an increased love of history and appreciate the study of it (aka have fun!) • Succeed at something difficult but worthwhile

Summer assignment: There are 4 parts, designed to introduce you to the course and get you prepared to work at the college level: 1)Read a chapter in the Foner textbook pgs. 537-585, “Give Me Liberty”Chapter 15. Take reading notes, identify the terms, answer the questions. Email me your notes, identifications and answers by July 31! 2)Memorize the presidents 3)Analyze primary source documents 4)Review your USI material in preparation for a diagnostic test on that content the first week back in September

Summer Assignment- 4 parts(rationales for each assignment are on schoolwires) 1)Textbook reading and outlining- • Foner textbook Give Me Liberty • Read chapter 15 and take reading notes, identify terms, significance, and do review questions pg. 585. • 2) memorize the presidents of the United States, in order, including name, date of terms, political party affiliation and an important event. Eg. • 1) George Washington, 1789-1797, no party, Whiskey Rebellion • 2) John Adams, 1797-1801, Federalist, Quasi War with France • 3) Thomas Jefferson 1801-1809, Democratic-Republican, Louisiana Purchase • and so on to #44)

  11. Summer assignment • 3) analyze primary sources And do HIPPO analysis (links and HIPPO worksheets Are on schoolwires) • 4) study your USI materials. There will be a test on your USI knowledge at the end of the 1st week back in September to assess what you remember from USI. (I will put some study tips/review sheet on school wires).
