Public Health – Academic Partnership DC DOH and GWU • Goal – To provide technical assistance for HIV/AIDS surveillance and epidemiology (A Greenberg PI) • Chief DOH AHPP Epidemiologist hired as GWU faculty – Dr A Castel in 8-06 • Technical evaluation of core HIV/AIDS surveillance activities – draft report submitted last week • Ongoing epidemiologic and technical assistance • National HIV Behavioral Surveillance System (M Magnus PI, I Kuo PD, J Peterson RS)

National HIV Behavioral Surveillance System (NHBS) Objective: To assess prevalence of and trends in HIV risk behaviors, HIV testing behaviors, and use of prevention services among MSM, IDU, and high risk heterosexuals • Conducted in alternating 12-month cycles • One group selected per cycle (MSM, IDU, HRH) • 25 cities around the U.S. • Current status – staff hired, IRB approvals obtained, clinic site selected, start date 11/06

SPNS YMSM of Color Initiative • Funded by HRSA in fall 2004 • Julia Hidalgo, Principal Investigator (Health Policy) • Manya Magnus, Project Director (Epi-Bio) • Eight grantees throughout U.S. • Grantee goal: To develop, implement, and evaluate innovative models of care for YMSM of color • GWU evaluation and support center • Center goals: • To support intervention and local evaluation efforts of grantees, with technical capacity, TA, and training expansion • To conduct a comprehensive, multi-site evaluation of the program

Other HIV-related Activities • Development of GWU HIV/AIDS Institute • Website launched • HIV certificate program • dCFAR application… • SPNS–IT project, HRSA-funded, M Magnus PD, to assess impact of IT on care of >7,000 HIV-P individuals in Louisiana • Strategic Consultant, WHO HIV/AIDS Division • Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation • Affiliation with Association of Public Health Laboratories
