Welcome! • Program is the following • Academic course on theory and politics of the African Diaspora • Classrooms with Brazilian colleagues selected by Criola and Uerj (first to institute affirmative action in Brazil, in 2003) • Instructors from Brazil and United States: academics, policy makers, civil society organizers • Modules on research, intellectual history, theory • Emphasis on Diasporic perspectives • Black Feminisms • Placement in social justice organization: Criola or Criola Partner

  3. Uerj • Classes take place in one of Rio de Janeiro’s main universities • First to implement affirmative action in 2003 • Located at the border between southern and northern part of Rio • Next to Maracana Stadium, Mangueira, and Vila Isabel • Accessible by subway

  4. Translators and Portuguese classes • Classes are from 1-6p, two times per week • Simultaneous translations • Portuguese classes at Criola • More intensive in the first three weeks
