Topics that you will learn about in the first part of the lesson: • Sport as a religion • In many early cultures, physical and sporting activities could not be seen as separate from religion. • Economic systems • Before we look at specific cultural aspects of the UK, USA and Australia, it would be useful to gain general understanding of how modern societies can vary simply in terms of their economic systems. This can often tell us about the values of that society • Surviving Ethnic Sports • Looking at the origins of sports and pastimes, it is clear that they were initially functional (e.g. Hunting and military purposes)

  5. Task 1 • Read the literature and answer the questions. • Highlight key points in the text.

  6. Task 2 Look at the table on page 231 • Choose one of 3 headings and provide a short paragraph describing either: • Sport as a religion • Difference between sport and religion • Sport and religion as cultural practices • Include real life examples in your summary

Write a match report for one of the following pastimes: The Haxey Hood Ashbourne’s Royal Shrovetide Football Gloucestershire Cheese Rolling and Wake Highland Games Include: What does it entail, any rules, what started the pastime/ sport? Who plays it? Where is it played?, why is it played?, what equipment was used? 2. Cultural traditions that have survived the test of time have common factors, what are they?
