  4. Causes Continued • Other Parts of the brain affected: (Definitions are on next slide.) • Auditory Cortex • Wernicke's area • Broca's area • Particularly the left side of the brain!

  5. Definitions • Auditory Cortex- makes people understand what they hear. • Wernicke's area- is where words are stored. • Broca’s Area- lets your speech organs receive the messages from Wernicke’s area.

  6. Symptoms • Person has difficulty naming an object or a familiar persons name. • The patient sometimes can see an object and know how to describe it but not actually name it such as. A box of matches. The person would say “A thing that makes fire.”

  7. Random Knowledge • A person with Anomia CAN do normal tasks such as work and drive. Basically, Any task that doesn’t require much communication. • Fun fact: People who are left handed or have a family history of “left-handedness” have a weaker left side of the brain. • “Researchers have found that persons with normal brains may have problems similar to those of persons suffering from Anomia if they are hampered by external forces such as distractions or intoxication.”

  8. Treatment • Speech Therapy • Although the person can’t relearn the words. They can be taught when to use them in common “context”. • Other then that there is no real treatment.
