Text A Farewell Speech Ladies and gentlemen, (Para. 1) Today’s meeting will be a most memorable occasion for me, because it is my time to thank everyone for their support and encouragement in the past year during my tenure as president of this group. Serving as your president gave me the opportunity to work with everyone here, and I count that one of the greatest personal rewards I received during the last year. 1 2

  14. Text (Para. 1) I remember how, at first, I was unsure of my ability to function effectively as your president. But now, with every member’s unselfish contribution to our work here, the job became a joy to me. Our successes this year are a direct result of the active participation of all the members in our group.

  15. Text (Para. 2) I am especially proud of the success of this year’s Arbor Day Fund Drive. Ms Lin Qiulan as chairperson of the Tree Sales Committee was directly responsible for the highest sales ever recorded during this activity. As a result, we are able to carry on some of our most important projects, and thousands of trees were distributed to the city residents for planting, thus contributing to the beauty and brilliance of our city for years to come.

  16. Text (Para. 3) Also, I must give credit to Ms Jiang for organizing some of the most memorable and interesting programs for each of our monthly meetings, and her programs provided much useful information about local plants and flowers, about producing better gardens, and many other topics.

The most frequently-used structures of emphasis include It-clause, what-clause and do or did foremphasizing an action. Ellipsis:Ellipsis is the omission of one or more words that are understood in the context. But the sentence or utterance should be grammatically correct. Inversion:In statements, it is usual for the verb to follow the subject. Sometimes, however, this word order is reversed. We refer to this as inversion.
