Vocabulary to Know • Mixture- a combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined • Solution- a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances uniformly dispersed throughout a single phase • Solute- in a solution the substance that dissolves in the solvent • Solvent- in a solution, the substance in which the solute dissolves • Concentration- the amount of a particular substance in a given quantity of a mixture, solution or ore • Solubility- the ability of one substance to dissolve in another at a given temperature and pressure

Properties of Mixtures • Two or more materials put together form a mixture if they do not reach to form a compound. • No chemical change happens when a mixture is made. • Each substance in a mixture keeps its identity. • A mixture is a physical change. • Materials in a mixture do not have to be mixed in a specific mass ratio.

  4. Solutions • A solution is a mixture that appears to be a single substance. • However a solution is composed of particles of two or more substances that are distributed evenly among each other. • Particles dissolve throughout the mixture. • In solutions the solute is the substance that is dissolved, and the solvent is the substance in which the solute is dissolved. • Particles in a solution are so small that they can never settle out or be removed by filtering.

  5. Concentration of Solutions • The measure of the amount of solute dissolved in a solvent is concentration. • Solutions can be either concentrated or diluted. • The ability of a solute to dissolve in a solvent at a certain temperature is solubility.
