Background • 1998 - Proposal for library cooperation in Calgary, Beaumont and Associates • 2003 - Independent library services review identifies Calgary Health Region and Tom Baker Cancer Centre client needs and concerns – Framework Report - “Making Information Count” • 2004 – Business Plan presented to Calgary Health Region senior executive

  5. Background • Strategic Alliance contract for Calgary Health Region library services signed July 2005 • University of Calgary assumed responsibility for CHR libraries on October 1, 2005 • Tom Baker Cancer Centre contract signed in March 2007, effective April 1, 2007

  6. Staffing: • CHR – 24, 605 FTE • TBCC – 464 FTE Communities served: • CHR – sites throughout Calgary. Total geographic area of 39,260 sq. km. Serves 36% of Alberta’s population. • ACB – TBCC serves all of southern Alberta

  7. University of Calgary Health Sciences Library/Foothills Medical Centre Rockyview General Hospital Tom Baker Cancer Centre Alberta Children’s Hospital Women’s Resource Centre Peter Lougheed Medical Centre

Governance • Contracts between University of Calgary and the Calgary Health Region, and between the University of Calgary and the Alberta Cancer Board • Establishment of Health Information Resources Management Committees to oversee the contracts • Management Committees report to senior administration of both parties

  9. Contractural issues • Privacy and network security • Staff - collective agreements • Intellectual property • Space • Network expansion • Collections – disposition and insurance • Termination conditions

  10. Accountability • In depth analysis of internal processes to accurately contract for service • Contract describes key service deliverables • Service level agreements define basic services and measure their delivery • Budget is presented for approval to Management Committee

  11. Service deliverables • Provision of information – collections, technical processing, document delivery • Training and information service support – teaching, searches, reference • Administration – accounting, human resources, communication plan, budget, evaluation

  17. Transition: Alberta Children’s Hospital Move • New Knowledge Centre centrally located • Sharing space with the Family Resource Centre • Network configuration still to be implemented

  20. Transition Staffing • Increase in FTE from 11.3 to 13.5 • Re-allocation of staff to meet new service delivery model Facilities • Closure of libraries in the Southport building and in the basement of the Foothills Medical Centre

  21. Transition Collection • Rationalization of the collection • 17,000 books added to collection including clinical texts as well as consumer health materials • Unique journals retained. Shift to electronic access for whole region • Records added to University of Calgary catalogue - Sirsi

  22. Transition ITS/Technical Services • Network connectivity via SuperNet or directly to UofC network • Authentication and user registration • Sirsi live date April 2007 • Serials Solutions – own A to Z list • SFX, EZproxy – own instance of both
