  1. 8th Grade Health Cardiovascular/ Respiratory System SOL: PEP. Target: The student will understand the importance of maintaining healthy body systems and their interdependence related to overall health.

  2. Bell Ringer • Journal: • Why do people exercise? What does it mean to be active? What kinds of activities do you do that keep your heart healthy?

  3. BREAK • Your last chance to use the bathroom and get a drink.

  4. Vocabulary • Arteries- Blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart to other parts of the body. • Aorta- Largest blood vessel, carries oxygen rich blood away from the heart. • Veins- Blood vessels that carry blood from the body back to the heart. • Inferior Vena Cava-Largest vein, carries oxygen poor blood to the heart • Superior Vena Cava- Carries oxygen poor blood to the heart.

  5. Vocabulary • Capillaries- Tiny blood vessels that connect the veins and arteries to the body’s cells. • Valve- one-way opening from one chamber or blood vessel to another, prevents the back-flow of blood. • Hypertension- Also called high blood pressure. • Heart Attack- The blockage of blood flow to the heart.

  6. Vocabulary • Stroke- Results from blood clots that block vessels in the brain, or form the rupture of a blood vessel in the brain. • Arteriosclerosis- A condition in which arteries harden. • Bronchi- The main opening which air enters the lungs. • Alveoli- Tiny air sacks in the lungs where carbon dioxide is exchanged with oxygen. • Asthma- A serious chronic condition that causes tiny air passages in the respiratory system to become narrow or blocked.

  7. Labeling of The Heart • M- Aorta • B- Superior Vena Cava • E- Right Ventricle • I- Left Atrium • H- Pulmonary Vein • A- Right Atrium • K- Left Ventricle • G- Pulmonary Artery • D- Valve • C- Inferior Vena Cava

  8. Blood Travel through the body • A system of Blood Vessels carries the blood through the body. These vessels include Arteries, Veins, and Capillaries. The vessels and the heart make up the Circulatory System. • Let’s follow a drop of blood through the blood vessels. When it leaves the LEFT VENTRICLE of the heart, it goes into the Aorta. This is the largest blood vessel in the body. This vessel branches so that the drop of blood can move into smaller arteries into the head, arms or legs.

  9. Blood Travel Through the Body • The droplet travels into smaller and smaller branches of arteries until it finally enter a blood vessel so tiny that it is naked to he eye. In this vessel, known as a Capillary, nutrients are exchanged for waste products. • Now that the blood has given up its Food and Oxygen, it must return to the heart to refuel. The droplet of blood leaves the capillary, and heads into a larger blood vessel called a Vein.

  10. Blood Travel Through the Body • The blood makes its way through branches of veins until it finds itself in the largest vein found in the body. This vein has two separate entranceways into the heart. Blood in need of refueling coming from the head and arms enters the heart through the Superior Vena Cava. Blood in need of refueling coming from the legs enters the heart through the Inferior Vena Cava. • The Vena Cava’s pour blood lacking oxygen into which chamber of the heart? Atrium.

  11. Finding Your Target Fitness Zone • 1. Subtract your age from 220. This will tell you your maximum heart rate. • 2. Multiply your maximum heart rate x 60%. This number is your minimum heart rate for fitness to take place. • 3. Multiply your maximum heart rate x 85%. This number is your maximum heart rate for fitness to take place. • 4. Your target heart rate falls between your maximum heart rate and your minimum heart rate.

  12. Example • 220-13= 207 207 = Max Heart Rate • 207 x .6= 124 124 = Minimum heart rate for fitness • 207 x .85= 176 176 = Maximum heart rate for fitness • Target Heart Rate falls between: 124-176

  13. Smoking Aerobics • Taking your pulse • Find your pulse in your neck or on your wrist • The teacher will time 6 seconds. • Add a zero to your number

  14. Smoking Aerobics • Once you have answered question 1 • Find a partner. • Get a blue step. • Have a seat on the blue step with your partner. • Your teacher will guide you through steps #2 and #3.

  15. Smoking Aerobics (HOMEWORK) • Once you have finished complete questions 1-10 on the back.

  16. Table of Contents Journal Cardiovascular/Respiratory Vocab/Continued Labeling Heart Smoking Aerobics/ Lab Questions

  17. Video • Real World Science: Circulatory and Respiratory Systems • Safari Montage • http://10.197.3.241/SAFARI/montage/play.php?keyindex=86247&location=005849
