ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION = formation of a new individuals from the cell(s) of a single parent.
Methods of Asexual Reproduction Plants: Stems a. Stems arch over and take root at their tips, forming new plants (runner) Underground Stems . Rhizomes . Bulb . Corms . Tubers
2. Leaves = leaf margins produce tiny plantlets that fall off 3. Roots = send up new stems from their roots
4. Plant Propagation (Vegetative Propagation) = Grafting – use to propagate a desired variety of shrub or tree
Animals 1. Budding = offspring develop as a growth on the body of the parent (Hydra) = the buds break away and take up an independent existence (Jellyfish) = the buds remain attached to the parent and the process results in colonies of animals (Corals)
2. Fragmentation (Regeneration/Regrowth) = spontaneously break up into pieces, and each fragments will form a mature organism
Other method of asexual reproduction: Binary fission = the living cell divides into two equal or nearly equal parts ( Amoeba, paramecium)
Sporulation = a spore is basically a reproductive cell that can grow into new cell through mitotic cell division. Spores are stored in special spore cases until they are ready to be released.
