  5. IEEE Milestones Program Guidelines • Milestone proposal is submitted by a Member on ethw.org, sponsored by a Section, a Society, or a Chapter, • Advocate is chosen to review proposal and assist proposers • When the sponsoring unit is not an IEEE Section, endorsement by the appropriate Section is required. • Approval by Advocate, including wording of citation • Approval by IEEE History Committee • Approval by IEEE Board of Directors • Milestone Dedication Ceremony

  6. First Steps in Proposing a Milestone • Choose a proposer • Obtain the sponsorship of an IEEE Organizational Unit (Section, Society, Council, Chapter, etc.) who will pay for the plaque(s) and ceremony • Obtain the permission of the owner of the site where the Milestone plaque will be mounted

  7. Process takes from 12-15 months • Depending on History Committee and Board of Directors meeting schedule. • Proposers should allow time to plan dedication ceremony and cast plaque(s) • Plaques take 8 weeks to cast

  8. Submission • Submission of the Proposal on the ETHW • Full guidelines and examples to follow can be found at: http://ieeemilestones.ethw.org/Milestone_Guidelines_and_How_to_Propose_a_Milestone

  9. Volunteer advocate works with Nominators • Ensures sufficient citations and references to support the claim • Helps develop a concise and accurate citation • Recommends IEEE History Committee action on proposal

  10. Approving the Milestone • IEEE History Committee votes whether or not to recommend IEEE Board of Directors final approval • If the History Committee recommends approval, History Center staff submits proposal to the Board of Directors for final action.

  11. Planning the Dedication Ceremony • Dedication ceremonies are in the hands of the sponsoring IEEE Organizational Unit. May be as elaborate or simple as desired. • Opportunities for local press, corporate, and political involvement, and high visibility for IEEE

  12. Planning the dedication ceremony • Templates are available on the ETHW to help in the planning • Recommend contacting the IEEE President’s Office early in the process to arrange and invite IEEE speakers.
