  1. JUDAISM Began more than 4,000 years ago in the Middle East

  2. The Israelites • Abraham made a covenant with G-d (Obey G-d’s law and get land in Canaan: Israel) • Kings Samuel and David • Famine and Drought = Egypt • Were slaves under the pharaoh

  3. Moses & the Exodus • G-d inflicted 10 plagues • Moses led the escape from Egypt in into the Sinai Desert (Passover) • Wandered for 40 years until Moses given 10 commandments on Mount Sinai and until returned to Canaan

  4. Jewish Law • Based on the Ten Commandments • 1-4: duty to G-d • 5-10: conduct toward others

  5. Kingdom of Israel • Around 1000 BCE, David united Israelites • Solomon – improved Jerusalem and tried to increase Israel’s influence

  6. Division and Conquest • Solomon’s death: 922 BCE • Unrest, high taxes, and forced labor - Kingdom split!

  7. Israel in the North • Judah in the South

  8. Too weak to stand • 722 BCE Israel fell to Assyria • 586 BCE Judah fell to Babylon • Nebuchadnezzar destroyed Solomon’s Temple

  9. Babylonian Captivity - Israelites were forced into exile in Babylon • Israelites became known as Jews • Cyrus (King of Persia) freed the Jews

  10. Diaspora • State of Israel: holy place • Scattered Jews around the world • Influenced Christianity and Islam
