  1. Chemistry, Management and Pesticides Review Power point

  2. Scientists answer questions dealing with…. order in nature predictions about what is likely to happen in nature. descriptions of what we find happening over and over in the same way. Disproving things Testing hypothesis Establishing a particular model or theory has a very high probability of being true

  3. Environmental Science focuses on… Connections and interactions between biotic and abiotic. Looks at ecosystems and their connections to organisms within and outside the ecosystem

  4. Scientists use ________ to predict natural happenings of the world Conceptual Models

  5. Negative VS. Positive feedback loops • Positive Feedback Loop—Changes further in the same direction. • A produces more of B which in turn produces more of A • If a chemical reaction causes the release of heat, and the reaction itself happens faster at higher temperatures • Negative Feedback Loop—Changes in the opposite direction. • the result of a process influences the operation of the process itself in such a way as to reduce changes. Negative feedback tends to make a system self-regulating; it can produce stability and reduce the effect of fluctuations.

  6. Synergistic effects… increased intensity caused by the combination of two substances on an organism

  7. Management Terms • Restoration • Bringing a damaged ecosystem back to its unspoiled, natural condition • Conservation • Careful and sensible management of natural resources (sustainable use) • Preservation • Setting aside undisturbed areas, maintaining them in a pristine state and protecting them from humans • Mitigation • The attempt to make an adverse environmental impact less severe • Remediation • Using chemical, biological or physical methods to remove chemically active pollutants • Reclamation • The return of massively scarred, denuded or devastated land to a condition that is environmentally useful and socially acceptable

  8. Basic Chemistry Protons Neutrons Electrons Isotopes Ions

  9. Nuclear Fission Produces high levels of heat used in industrial applications

  10. What can we do with non-degradable pollutants? Recycle them Reuse them Refrain from introducing them into the environment to begin with

  11. The Industrial Revolution Increased….. Demand for materials Spread of disease Pollution Population

  12. Being nonrenewable means That it can be used up or depleted

  13. Potential vs. Kinetic Energy Kinetic Energy—energy in motion—wind, flowing streams, electricity. Potential Energy—Stored Energy—water behind a dam, unlit stick of dynamite, gasoline.

  14. Low-quality vs. High-quality energy High-Quality Matter—concentrated, found near the earth’s surface, great potential as a resource. Low-Quality Matter—dilute, found far underground, beneath the ocean, or in the atmosphere, little potential as a resource.

  15. What is Frontier Science New and upcoming research, this is a field with not a lot of documentation and examples to follow. There is not a lot of documented data

  16. Know the types of pesticides and what they kill Insecticides—Insect-killers Herbicides—Weed-killers Fungicides—Fungus-killers Nematocides—Roundworm –killers Rodenticides—Rat- and Mouse-killers

  17. Know the positive vs. negative of pesticides

  18. Calculating PPM • Concentration is measured in parts per million (ppm). • 50,000 ppm is equivalent to 5% • To change ppm to percent, move the decimal four places to the left and add percent sign.

  19. What is the pesticide treadmill? A situation where farmers are forces to pay more for a pest control program that often becomes less effective as genetic resistance develops.

  20. Know the different “organic” pesticide methods • Crop rotation • Planting rows of hedges or trees around fields to hinder insect invasions. • Adjusting planting times so that major insect pests either starve or get eaten by their natural predators. • Planting trap crops to lure pests away from the main crop. • Aqua Heat • Insect Birth Control • Radiation • IPM

  21. Know your pesticide table

  22. Know your video questions
