  2. What do we focus on? Something that effects everyone AIR Most air pollution is caused by burning fossil fuels Fossil fuels are burned largely to produce electrical energy Technology and electronics consume a lot of that energy WE NEED TO REDUCE THAT

  3. What can we do? • People are little bit lazy • They don’t like to change their behavior So we have to make something that is easy for people to use. Without doing anything differently, they can still make a difference.

  4. Let’s think about laptops • 117 million laptops in the US • The energy they use is the equivalent of 5.5 million barrels of oil per year What if you could reduce energy consumption by using your laptop just like you do every day?

  7. Green Key • A new keyboard technology for laptops

  8. How will it work? • Each key will be connected to a nanogenerator, similar to the hybrid technology in a Toyota Prius, just very very small. • When you type, the mechanical energy produced by the keystroke will be transformed into electricity that will charge the battery.

  9. How will it work? • Laptops needs more power than mechanical energy alone can provide, that’s why the traditional battery will be kept. • But you can go longer between charges, which means your laptop can stay unplugged more often. The net energy usage is lower.

  10. Why is it good for the consumers? • You get more use out of every battery charge cycle • For the person who is using the computer, they don’t have to be stuck to the wall outlet. • It makes your laptop better by making it more portable. • And that’s the whole point of a laptop.

  11. Why is it good for the world? Less energy is sucked out of the wall Less fossil fuel is used to produce that energy Less air pollution If we could extend battery charge by just 5%, we could save 300,000 barrels of oil per year, which would reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
