Paul Revere (1735-1818) • Paul Revere lived in Boston, Massachusetts when Great Britain ruled the thirteen colonies. • People in Boston begin to boycott items from Britain(Refusing to buy or use). • He fought for the British. • Paul Revere voted for a tea party. • Revere got caught in the middle of his 1775 ride before warning everybody. • Revere was a silversmith and learned he needed diligence. • Revere joined the Sons of Liberty.

Frederick Douglass(1818-1895) • Frederick Douglass was a slave that lived in Baltimore, Maryland. • Douglass taught himself how to read and learn about freedom. • Slaves had no rights. • Abolitionist-a person who wants to end slavery. Douglass escaped by dressing up as a sailor and went from Baltimore(A city in a slave state) to New York(A free state) • Douglass wrote about himself and slave-catchers could’ve caught him, but after escaping to Great Britain, his friends paid $711.66 to Hugh Auld and Douglass was free. • After Douglass escaped, he lived in Rochester, New York an antislavery newspaper. • He gave speeches to women and wanted to end slavery. • In 1838, he was an abolitionist in New Bedford.

Eleanor Roosevelt(1884-1962) • She was wealthy. • She helped others on holidays. • She was respectful. • She went to England for boarding school. • She was quiet and shy. • She married FDR in 1905 and had 6 children. • She was First Lady and she cooked hot dogs. • She got 300,000 letters asking for help. • She traveled around the U.S.A. giving speeches. • She was FDR’s “eyes and ears”. • She was sad when Franklin died.

  7. Mary McLeod Bethune(1875-1955) Mary McLeod Bethune was diligent and respectful. She went to school but wasn’t treated fairly. Helped Black people get education And built school in Daytona Beach Was appointed by president FDR Gave more opportunities for education to,,, all,,,,, people….

Lyndon Baines Johnson(1908-1973) • He was very poor(poverty). • He taught school in Cotulla, Texas after going to college. • He ran for USA house in 1937. • He voted for more money for school. • He was youngest in Congress. • He thought in 1950s, colored people were treated badly. • He became president when JFK died. • His diligence ended segregation in 1964. • He promised that if he was elected, he’d work to create the Great Society. • He served 1963-1969. • He wanted to stop war in Vietnam. • He didn’t run for president in 1968. • Chose Thurgood Marshall to be on Supreme Court.

Thurgood Marshall(1908-1993 • He was born in Baltimore. • He was smart and curious • He wanted to be a lawyer/judge. • He went to college at Oxford Lincoln University. • He became top student in class. • He learned a lot from Charles Hamilton Houston. • Marshall and Houston became very good friends. • He and Houston wanted to change civil rights. • He couldn't go to the University in Maryland. • He worked for the NAACP in 1934 and Houston did too. • Johnson chose him on Supreme Court and was first African American. • His traits are justice, freedom, and respect. • In 1987 Americans celebrated the two hundredth anniversary.

Cesar Chavez • He was Mexican American. • He was born in Yuma, Arizona. • His family moved from farm to farm for work. • He went to thirty different schools. • He joined the Navy in 1944. • He married Helen Fabela when he was 21. • He lived in a one-room shack. • He wasn’t the only one to make things better in California. • He used nonviolence protests. • When he was 48, he lead a 1601.6-kilometer march. • He went on many fasts. • He walked every step on the 1601.6-kilometer march. • He was diligent and made justice. • He often said, “Si, se puede(Yes, it can be done).” • His birthday is a holiday in seven states. • He was a good speaker and leader. • He studied the work of Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. • He taught Mexican Americans about the rights.
