  1. Classifying Animals 5th Grade Science Ms. Bridgeland

  2. Now that we know how all animals are similar, we need to learn how to classify them. • What does classify mean?

  3. Classify: to find patterns among living things and group them into categories • Why do scientists need to classify different animals?

  4. Ways that Classifying can help Scientists: • Classifying helps show which animals are closely related to one another • Classifying can show the order in which animals appeared on Earth.

  5. Remember that animals are grouped into one kingdom, known as the “Animalia” or Animal Kingdom? • The Animal Kingdom is divided into two large groups: • 1) Vertebrates • 2) Invertebrates

  6. 1) Vertebrates: animals that have backbones2) Invertebrates: animals that do not have backbones

  7. Vertebrates: have backbones

  8. Vertebrates: have backbones

  9. Invertebrates: have no backbones!! • How do invertebrates survive without backbones?

  10. Invertebrates:many have a hard outer case called an exoskeleton

  11. Exoskeleton: an animals hard outer case • Why do animals need an exoskeleton?

  12. CertainInvertebratesneed an Exoskeleton because: • It protects them from predators (animals trying to eat them • It protects them from harsh conditions in the environment (getting stepped on, etc.) to make them stronger • It keeps them from drying out

  13. Break into groups and examine the animals on your desk. • Place the animals that you think are Vertebrates into one group, animals that you think are Invertebrates in another group, and animals that you are not sure about in a third group.

  14. Has anyone ever seen a Cicada?

  15. Cicadas • There are over 1,500 species of Cicadas, but the best known one is the periodical cicada, which comes once every 17 years.

  16. Cicadas: • Spend 17 years of their lives underground feeding on fluids from the roots of forest trees • When they emerge from the ground to look for a mate, they shed their exoskeletons • They only spend 3-4 weeks above ground to find a mate and lay eggs and then they pass away

  17. Cicadas: emerge from their exoskeleton and leave it behind

  18. Cicadas: Adaptations • Not dangerous –do not have adaptations to sting or bite like other insects • One of their best adaptations is that there are so many of them that emerge at once, that they are less likely to get eaten • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICDdTBgqYt0

  19. Why do Cicadas lose their exoskeletons? • When they come out of the ground, they have grown into fully mature adults, so they grow a new exoskeleton that is larger.

  20. Why don’t humans have exoskeletons that they leave behind when they become adults?

  21. Vertebrates like humans have endoskeletons • Endoskeletons are hard structures on the inside of the body instead of the outside. They are living and can grow.

  22. Endoskeletons

  23. Differences between Exoskeleton and Endoskeleton • Exoskeleton: 1) For invertebrates 2) On the outside of the body 3) Nonliving 4) Cannot grow Endoskeleton: 1) For vertebrates 2) On the inside of the body 3) Living 4) Can grow
