Andrew Jackson Notes • Born and raised in a log cabin in the wilderness region of the Carolinas • Orphaned at age 15; lived in poverty; became a “self-made man” • War Hero– War of 1812 • Was known as “Old Hickory” • Elected President in 1828 • Small farmers, craftsmen, and frontiersmen idolized him • He favored “States’ Rights”– he thought state governments should have more power than the Federal government.

Trail of Tears - 1838 Timeline • 1814-1827 – Andrew Jackson lead army in the taking of Indian lands • 1829 – President Andrew Jackson sets policy for relocating Native People • 1830 - Congress passes Indian Removal Act. This requires all tribes east of the Mississippi to relocate to the west. • 1830-1835 – Different Native tribes sign “Removal Treaties” • 1838 – 7,000 U.S. Troops move Cherokee off land and to the west. This is known as the “Trail of Tears”. • Education of Little Tree
