  3. THE ELEMENTS OF ART • LINE • SHAPE • FORM • COLOR • VALUE • TEXTURE • SPACE

  4. LINE • A continous mark made on a surface by a moving point

  5. SHAPE • An enclosed space, limited to two dimensions- length and width. Shapes may be geometric (measurable) or organic (not measurable or of nature).

  6. FORM- Element of Art • A three-dimensional area (height, width, & depth) which encloses volume. Form can be real or implied.

  7. COLOR- Element of Art • Produced by light of various wavelengths, and when light strikes an object and reflects back to the eyes.

  8. VALUE- Element of Art • Lightness or darkness; dealing with the degree of contrast between light, medium, and dark.

  11. PRINCIPLES OF ART • How the elements of art are applied or used.

  12. THE PRINCIPLES OF ART • EMPHASIS • BALANCE • RHYTHM & MOVEMENT • PATTERN • CONTRAST • UNITY

  13. EMPHASIS- Principle of Design • The focal point or center of interest, an area of heightened interest in an artwork.

  14. BALANCE • The way the elements are arranged to create a sense of stability or equilibrium. Balance may be symmetrical or asymmetrical.

  15. RHYTHM AND MOVEMENT • The real or implied movement of objects or spaces. It also refers to the path our eyes follow when looking at a work of art

  16. PATTERN (REPETITION/VARIATION) • The recurrence of an element to create order or unity. It contributes to rhythm and movement in creation of patterns.

  17. CONTRAST • A large difference between two things; a way of juxtaposing elements of art to stress the differences between them, such as value or color.

  18. UNITY • The quality of oneness or wholeness, the basic compatibility between all elements within a piece of art.

  19. Examples http://www.madzik.pl/manga.htm How does this image use Unity ? How is this image Balanced ?

  20. Where do you see Rhythm & Movement in the picture? How is Winnie the Pooh Emphasized in this picture?

  21. What Texture do you think the hair is from this drawing? Rough? Smooth? How does the human Form emerge from the white paper using the elements? How do the Values of grays shown create Transition?
