  1. ITPA Confinement Database and ModelingProposals for Coordinated Research in 2004 • Brief reports/discussion to update progress and plans on 2005 proposals: • CDB-2 Confinement scaling in ELMy H-modes: b degradation • CDB-3 Improving the condition of Global DBs: H data • CDB-4 Confinement scaling in ELMy H-modes: n* scans • CDB-5 Inside and vertical pellet launch: ELM behaviour • CDB-6 Improving the condition of Global DBs: Low A • CDB-7 Ohmic identity experiments: test of scaling • Initial discussion of extensions and new proposals for 2005: • To be developed in more detail during Fall 2004 meeting

  2. CDB-2 Confinement scaling in ELMy H-modes:b degradation • High Priority Issue: • Resolve difference between b scaling of global confinement databases and machine parameter scans • Initial proposal for 2004 collaboration: • Scan with mainly RF, i.e. to vary Te/Ti for more ITER like conditions on AUG (F. Ryter) • Extend scan to b limit on JET (G. Cordey) • Response at November IEA Collaboration meeting in Naka: • High level of commitment: JET (Cordey), NSTX (?),JT-60U (?) • Will consider proposals: MAST (?) • Unlikely at this stage: AUG (Ryter), DIII-D (Petty) • Present status:

  3. CDB-3 Improving the condition of Global DBs:H data • High Priority Issue: • Though there is some H data in the Global H-mode DB (AUG 4%, DIII-D 5%, JET 4%, C-Mod 0%, JT60U 0%) there is no H data in the pedestal DB • Request one full hydrogen ELMy H-mode programme on each device, with particular emphasis to be placed on pedestal measurements • Initial proposal for 2004 collaboration: • JET and JT-60U to analyze H data • Response at November IEA Collaboration meeting in Naka on 2004 expts: • High level of commitment: JET (Cordey), JT-60U (?) • Unlikely at this stage: AUG (Ryter), DIII-D (DeBoo) • Present status:

  4. CDB-4 Confinement scaling in ELMy H-modes:n* scans • High Priority Issue: • Determine whether n* or n/nG is the appropriate dimensionless parameter for global scaling • Initial proposal for 2004 experiments: • JET (G. Cordey) and C-Mod (J. Snipes) to maximize range in n*, and provide a basis for experiments to be considered by JT-60U (T. Takizuka) and DIID-D (C. Petty) at intermediate n* • Response at November IEA Collaboration meeting in Naka: • Will consider proposals: AUG (Ryter), C-Mod (Snipes), DIII-D (Petty), JET (Cordey), JT-60U (Takizuka) • Present status:

  5. CDB-5 Inside and vertical pellet launch:ELM behaviour • High Priority Issue: • Test the effect of pellets on ELMs to see if the DW/Wped vs collisionality scaling is similar on the different machines (see Polevoi NF 2003). • Initial proposal for 2004 collaboration: • Try to match as closely as possible on DIII-D and AUG the JET pedestal conditions from earlier pellet experiments (no pellet experiment on JET in 2004?). • Response at November IEA Collaboration meeting in Naka: • High level of commitment: HT-7 (?), JT-60U (?), MAST (?) • Will consider proposals: DIII-D (Baylor), JET (Saibene), HL-2A • Unlikely at this stage: AUG (Lang) • Present status:

  6. CDB-6 Improving the condition of Global DBs:Low A • High Priority Issue: • Scaling of tE and pedestal characteristics are uncertain due to narrow range of A - global ELMy confinement and pedestal data at low A is needed • Initial proposal for 2004 collaboration: • Compare discharges with similar engineering parameters (e.g., R, A, Ip, Bt, Pheat, shape, etc) in both L-mode and H-mode on MAST (R. Akers, A. Kirk), and NSTX (S. Kaye, R. Maingi). Use center stack as limiter in L-mode. Tune H-mode carefully to ensure similar ELM behavior. Determine variation in both core and pedestal stored energies. Prepare for subsequent dimensionless variable scans to understand dependence of tE on b and r*. • Response at November IEA Collaboration meeting in Naka: • High level of commitment: MAST (Akers), NSTX (Kaye) • Present status:

  7. CDB-7 Ohmic identity experiments:test of scaling • High Priority Issue: • Does the principle of characterizing confinement in terms of dimensionless parameters work under Ohmic conditions? • Initial proposal for 2004 collaboration: • Match dimensionless parameters of AUG (F. Ryter), TS (F. Imbeaux), FTU (M. Romanelli), TCV (H. Weissen) Ohmic shots/sequences in JET (G. Cordey) to test scaling. Possibly include C-Mod? • Basically, each machine will bring its best Ohmic cases to JET and JET will try to match them. • Response at November IEA Collaboration meeting in Naka: • High level of commitment: FTU (M. Romanelli), JET (Cordey), HL-2A (?) • Will consider proposals: C-Mod (Snipes), TCV (Weissen), Tore Supra (Imbeaux) • Unlikely at this stage: AUG (Ryter) • Present status:
