  3. Factors that reduces life span: Smoking • It’s no brainer that smoking is a major reason of preventable death. But still for some it takes a heart attack or a lung cancer before they realize how damaging this small habit is • We don’t worry about smoking as we don’t worry about having a coke. But unfortunately it has dramatic effects on our body. E.g. it cause thickening of blood which as result affects blood supply of heart, leading to a heart attack • Apart from damaging lung and heart, smoking is also a reason of mouth, throat and stomach cancer. It also affects fertility in men, weakens the bone, damage skin Visit our website: www.add15years.in

  4. Factors that reduces life span: Overweight • Overweight is a risk factor for health and risk factor for taking years away from our long life. Many things happen to our body when we are overweight • Body mass index is a measure that tells us if we are obese or not. • A healthy BMI ranges between 18-25 BMI is above 25 we use term ‘obesity’. If it gets 40 or more, it’s a medical emergency. And for such patients Bariatric surgery is recommended. • For persons with severe obesity (BMI ≥40), life expectancy is reduced by as much as 20 years in men and by about 5 years in women • Overweight or Obesity is a major contributor in:- 1. Diabetes 2. Blood Pressure 3. Heart diseases 4. Arthritis 5. Gallbladder diseases 5. Certain cancers and other chronic conditions Visit our website: www.add15years.in

  5. Factors that reduces life span: Lack of exercise Today’s environment has dramatically changed, most of the jobs now require sitting in front of computers in comfortable offices with air conditioning where we end up spending most of our time sitting, with not enough activity outdoors • For any body above 18, it is recommended to perform 45 minutes of moderately intense physical activities daily. A regular exercise can definitely add years to our life • whenever we start exercising several things happen to us which are very healthy for our body. The very thought of exercising starts releasing hormones or chemicals into our blood which are very good for our health • A moderate exercise includes: 1. Walk. Using stairs instead of elevator 2. Outdoor games 3. Gym • Lack of exercise can lead to loss of muscle mass, bone mass. Since muscles support our joint. Muscle loss can further lead to arthritis. • Regular exercise can delay memory loss as one grow older. Visit our website: www.add15years.in

  6. Factors that reduces life span: Blood pressure • Our normal body blood pressure is set at 120 mm of systolic and 80 mm of diastolic blood pressure. Anyone who has systolic blood pressure more than 120, or diastolic blood pressure more than 80, we call it as high blood pressure by definition. • How body reacts to higher blood pressure? First thing, heart has to work harder with high blood pressure, so heart becomes thicker and bigger. While it is good for the body muscles, it is not good for a heart because heart has only very limited blood supply, so heart cannot afford to be thicker and bigger. • Apart from stroke, heart attack or failure, high blood pressure starts affecting kidneys too and patient can start losing kidney function. It may also cause vision loss • High blood pressure, is known as the “silent killer.” This means it does not have any symptoms and can go untreated for a long time, which can lead to many major health risks. If left untreated, a blood pressure of 180/120 or higher results in an 80% chance of death within one year, with an average survival rate of ten months Visit our website: www.add15years.in

  7. Factors that reduces life span: Blood sugar • Our normal blood sugar is 100. This level is also known as fasting blood sugar level. • Our blood sugar does not starts rising overnight. It happens very slowly. Once in a year, we must check our blood chemistry but, if we have a strong family history of diabetes then, we should check our blood sugar every six months somewhere around from age 30 and after • Complications that can arise with high blood sugar: 1. Cardiovascular disease 2. Nerve damage (neuropathy) 3. Kidney damage 4. Alzheimer's disease 5. Hearing impairment 6. Skin conditions (fungal infections) • All these changes will keep happening and we will not even know about it unless late in the game, we start developing serious symptoms. 8. Medical tests that are helpful: • HBA1C: The HbA1c test, also known as glycated hemoglobin test, is an important blood test that gives a good indication of how well your diabetes is being controlled. 1.HbA1c below 42 mmol/mol (6.0%): Non-diabetic. 2.HbA1c between 42 and 47 mmol/mol (6.0–6.4%): Prediabetes 3.HbA1c of 48 mmol/mol (6.5%) or over: Type 2 diabetes • Heart tests: Heart tests give you and your doctor more information about the condition of your heart and can help you find out which treatment(s) may be best for you 1. Echocardiogram (echo) tests 2. Electrocardiograph (ECG) tests • BMI test: It is a simple calculation using a person's height and weight. • Other tests: Tests like complete blood count (CBC) gives us full account of our blood.
