  3. READ: ISAIAH 23:1-3 PROPHECY AGAINST TYRE 1 The burden against Tyre. Wail, you ships of Tarshish! For it is laid waste, So that there is no house, no harbor; From the land of Cyprus it is revealed to them. 2 Be still, you inhabitants of the coastland, You merchants of Sidon, Whom those who cross the sea have filled. 3 And on great waters the grain of Shihor, The harvest of the River, is her revenue; And she is a marketplace for the nations.

READ: 2 SAMUEL 5:11-12 11 Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David: They brought cedar trees and carpentersandmasons And They built David a house. 12 Therefore David knew that the LORD had established him as king over Israel And that He had exalted His kingdom for the sake of His people Israel.

READ: 1 KINGS 5:1 1 Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants to Solomon, Because he heard that they had anointed him king in place of his father, for Hiram had always loved David. READ: 1 KINGS 9:11 11 Hiram the king of Tyre had supplied Solomon with cedar and cypress and gold, as much as he desired. And Solomon gave Hiram twenty cities in the land of Galilee. READ: 1 KINGS 10:22 22 Solomon had merchant ships at sea with the fleet of Hiram. Once every three years the merchant ships came bringing gold, silver, ivory, apes, and monkeys.

READ: JEREMIAH 27:1-8 1 In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying, 2 Thus says the LORD to me: ‘Make for yourselves bonds and yokes, and put them on your neck.’ 3 ‘Send them to the king of Edom, the king of Moab, the king of the Ammonites, the king of Tyre and the king of Sidon, by the hand of the messengers who come to Jerusalem to Zedekiah king of Judah.’

I will cause many nations to come up against you, as the sea causes its waves to come up.”

You were filled and very glorious in the midst of the seas. 26 Your oarsmen brought you into many waters, But the east wind broke you in the midst of the seas. 27 Your riches, wares, and merchandise, Your mariners and pilots, Your caulkers and merchandisers, All your men of war who are in you And the entire company which is in your midst, Will fall into the midst of the seas on the day of your ruin.

Every precious stone was your covering: The sardius, topaz, and diamond, Beryl, onyx, and jasper, Sapphire, turquoise, and emerald with gold. The workmanship of your timbrels and pipes was prepared for you on the day you were created.” 14 “You were the anointed cherub who covers. I established you. You were on the holy mountain of God. You walked back and forth in the midst of fiery stones.”

The wounded shall be judged in her midst by the sword against her on every side. Then they shall know that I am the LORD.’” NKJV

READ: JEREMIAH 2:18 18 Why take the road to Egypt, To drink the waters of Sihor? Or why take the road to Assyria, To drink the waters of the River? NKJV

  31. READ: ISAIAH 23:4-5 4 Be ashamed, O Sidon; For the sea has spoken, The strength of the sea, saying, "I do not labor, nor bring forth children; Neither do I rear young men,Nor bring up virgins.“ 5 When the report reaches Egypt, They also will be in agony at the report of Tyre.

WHAT IS THE SEA SAYING TO SIDON? WHAT WAS THE SEA, TO THE PEOPLE OF SIDON? HOW WOULD EGYPT RESPOND TO THIS?

  33. QUESTIONS: ISAIAH 23:4-5 5 When the report reaches Egypt, They also will be in agony at the report of Tyre. HOW WOULD EGYPT RESPOND TO THIS? READ: EZEKIEL 29:18-20 585-572BC? 18 Son of man, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon caused his army to labor strenuously against Tyre. Every head was made bald and every shoulder rubbed raw; Yet neither he Nor his army received wages from Tyre, For the labor which they expended on it. 19 Thus says the Lord GOD: “Surely, I will give the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. He shall take away her wealth, carry off her spoil and remove her pillage. And That will be the wages for his army.” 20 “I have given him the land of Egypt for his labor, Because they worked for Me,” says the Lord GOD. NKJV

  34. QUESTIONS: ISAIAH 23:4-5 WHO HELPED EZRA REBUILD THE TEMPLE? WHAT DID THE PEOPLE OF TYRE & SIDON DO? READ: EZRA 3:6-7 7 The children of Israel gave money to the masons and the carpenters, and food, drink, and oil to the people of Sidon and Tyre to bring cedar logs from Lebanon to the sea, to Joppa, according to the permission which they had from Cyrus king of Persia. READ: ISAIAH 23:6-9 6 Cross over to Tarshish; Wail, you inhabitants of the coastland! 7 Is this your joyous city, Whose antiquity is from ancient days, Whose feet carried her far off to dwell? 8 Who has taken this counsel against Tyre, the crowning city, Whose merchants are princes, Whose traders are the honorable of the earth? 9 The LORD of hosts has purposed it, To bring to dishonor the pride of all glory, To bring into contempt all the honorable of the earth.

QUESTIONS: ISAIAH 23:6-9 6 Cross over to Tarshish; Wail, you inhabitants of the coastland! 7 Is this your joyous city, Whose antiquity is from ancient days, Whose feet carried her far off to dwell? 8 Who has taken this counsel against Tyre, the crowning city, Whose merchants are princes, Whose traders are the honorable of the earth? 9 The LORD of hosts has purposed it, To bring to dishonor the pride of all glory, To bring into contempt all the honorable of the earth. WHO WERE THE PEOPLE OF TARSHISH? DESCEDENTS OF JAPHETH? WHY ARE THE PEOPLE OF TARSHISH WAILING? WHO HAS TAKEN COUNSEL AGAINST TYRE? WHY?

  37. QUESTIONS: ISAIAH 23:6-9 6 Cross over to Tarshish; Wail, you inhabitants of the coastland! WHO WERE THE PEOPLE OF TARSHISH? DESCEDENTS OF JAPHETH? READ: GENESIS 10:1-4 1 This is the genealogy of the sons of Noah: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Sons were born to them after the flood. 2 The sons of Japheth wereGomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras. 3 The sons of Gomer wereAshkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah. 4 The sons of Javan wereElishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.   38. QUESTIONS: ISAIAH 23:6-9 6 Cross over to Tarshish; Wail, you inhabitants of the coastland! WHY DID JEHOSHAPHAT WANT AHAZIAH TO DO? WHERE WAS HE PLANNING TO GO? WHY? READ: 2 CHRONCILES 20:35-37 35 Jehoshaphat king of Judah allied himself with Ahaziah king of Israel, who acted very wickedly. 36 He allied himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish. And They made the ships in Ezion Geber. 37 Eliezer, son of Dodavah of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, Saying, Because you have allied yourself with Ahaziah, the LORD has destroyed your works. The ships were wrecked, so that they were not able to go to Tarshish. NKJV

WHY ARE THE PEOPLE OF TARSHISH WAILING?? WHAT HAPPENED TO THIS JOYOUS CITY? READ: EZEKIEL 26:13-14 13 “I will put an end to the sound of your songs and The sound of your harps shall be heard no more.” 14 “I will make you like the top of a rock. You shall be a place for spreading nets and you shall never be rebuilt, For I, the LORD have spoken,” says the Lord GOD.

WHY ARE THE PEOPLE OF TARSHISH WAILING?? WHAT HAPPENED TO THIS JOYOUS CITY? READ: EZEKIEL 26:17-18 17 “They will take up a lamentation for you and say to you: ‘How you have perished, O one inhabited by seafaring men. O renowned city, Who was strong at sea, She and her inhabitants, Who caused their terror to be on all her inhabitants!’” 18 “The coastlands tremble on the day of your fall. Yes, the coastlands by the sea are troubled at your departure.”
