  1. Point/Counterpoint By: Erin Ranieri RDG 5410 Madonna University

  2. Should Facebook be used in classroom instruction?

  3. The Facebook Facts • More than 500 million active users. • 50% of these users log in each day. • Average user spends over 700 minutes per month on Facebook • More than 30 Billion pieces of content shared each month (web links, news stories, posts, notes, photos and more!) • More than 1 million developers from more than 180 countries • More than 550,000 applications currently on Facebook (KISSmetrics 2012)

  4. Facebook Can be Used in the Classroom! • Instant feedback • Help new students settle in • Student more likely to interact with faculty • Group projects can be executed on Facebook • Outsiders can give their input • Students can stay connected anywhere • Instructors can better understand the interests of students (Brown 2011)

  5. YES! • Online social networking can be used to help students work from home on group projects. • Based on the research, students are spending so much time in these places already that, it would be an easy way to incorporate in any classroom setting. (Bynum) • Many companies are putting ads or links to Facebook, Twitter and MySpace, being familiar with these websites could be an advantage for future employment. (Bynum) • According to the Facebook Generation article, many students feel their time is valued more when they are asked to post blogs and make websites for classes. As one student mentioned it was more authentic. (Kittsis 2008) • Kevin Kelly explaining technology will bring us more possibilities. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iH5rsM5W8R8&feature=pyv

  6. YES! • Setting up Facebook for the classroom can teach students how to use the internet and how to set privacy settings, so that they can be safe on the internet. (Finnegan 2010) • Students can be updated on assignments immediately instead of the next day of class. (Finnegan 2010) • We can share news; Facebook is a distribution tool and can be used to post photos and videos of recent events. • Social networking isn’t for college kids anymore, everyone including parents are using it making it a great way to communicate with teachers and their children. (Melton 2009) • “Failure to integrate social media to further engage students is doing a disservice to the future leaders of our world.” (Bynum 2011)

  7. NO! • Teachers have to be more careful using social networking sites because theycould risk losing their job because of inappropriate posting and behavior. • “New York City public schoolteachers may not contact students through personal pages on Web sites like Facebook and Twitter…” (Chen 2012) • “dozens of teachers have been investigated and some have been fired for inappropriate interactions and relationships with students that began or were conducted on social media Web sites…In 2009, for instance, there were 14 such accusations involving Facebook; in the first 11 months of 2011, there were 69. ” (Chen 2012)

  8. NO! • Teachers and administrators have not had the proper professional development on how to best use this tool in educational settings. (Dmourlam 2011) • Student safety is an issue for schools who have already been using social networking in the classroom. (Melton 2009) • In the elementary setting, students are too young to be involved in social media. They need to be focused on the basic academic information.

  9. My Personal Reflection • I feel that as technology becomes more involved in our everyday, we will be using many different kinds of social networking sites. As a teacher and a normal person, I feel that students having access to my Facebook file would set me up for something that could put my job in jeopardy. That is something I will prevent if I can. Therefore, instead of using Facebook as a collaborating site, I could also use other free sites like Vyew or create my own website for parents to follow and have updated photos and information. There is a lot of research that shows the positive repercussions of using Facebook in the classroom, but I think that we have more secure ways of communication that our students can access and still reap all the benefits as if we were using Facebook.
