  3. Preparing Land and Tools • Name your mining company. • Review the costs: • Tools: • Toothpick: $1 • Paper clip: $2 • Muffin: $2 • Mining: $1/minute (up to 5 minutes) • Fines $1-10 • Purchase price of ore (chips): $2/.1g

  4. Preparing Land and Tools • Trace muffin for top view and side view. • Mass the muffin using the balance. • Get your mining tools.

Mining for Ore • Using only the tools (no hands or fingers), mine for ore (chips). • Mining cost is $1/minute up to 5 minutes • Partner will time you and record your mining time on your data sheet • Time your partner as they mine • Count and find the mass of the chips • Bring chips to teacher for “purchase” • Deposit chips in the cup once purchased

  6. Reclaiming the Land • Using only the mining tools, all remaining muffin pieces must be placed back into the outlined area on your graph paper • Partner must time you while you reclaim and record your time in the data sheet • Raise your hand to have your reclaimed site inspected.

  7. Cleaning Your Lab Station • Throw away graph paper. • Return tools to teacher—unreturned tools or broken tools cost twice their rental price) • Return to your seat and make sure your data sheet has all the information indicated on the board. • We’ll do the calculations together.
