  2. Objectives • Theobjectivesofthisplanareto: • Provide training, guidelines, and procedures designed to prevent or minimize occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other potentially infectious agents. • Ensure compliance with the Bloodborne Pathogen Standard

  3. What areBloodbornePathogens Bloodborne pathogensaremicroorganismssuchasvirusesorbacteriathatarecarriedinbloodandbodyfluidsandcancausediseaseinpeople.

  4. Types of BloodbornePathogens • Bloodborne PathogensInclude(butnotlimitedto) • Hepatitis A,B&C • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) • Malaria • Syphilis • Brucellosis

  5. What is Hepatitis Hepatitisis a disorder involving inflammation of the LIVER. Symptomsincludelossofappetite, darkurine, fatigue, and sometimes fever. The liver may become enlargedandJAUNDICEmayoccur, givingtheskina yellow tinge. Hepatitismay be acute or chronic. The acute form can subside after about two months or, rarely, can result in liverfailure. Chroniccarriersareatriskoflastingliver disease. HepatitisA,oncecalledinfectioushepatitis,is the most common cause of acute hepatitis. Usually transmittedbyfoodandwatercontaminatedbyhuman waste, such infections can reach epidemic proportions in unsanitary regions. 5

  6. HepatitisBoftencausesaninitialepisodeofliverdisease, but both forms occasionally lead to chronic hepatitis. Anotherformofhepatitis, calleddeltahepatitis,is caused by a very small virus that cannot replicate on its own. InsteaditrequiresthepresenceofthehepatitisB virus. Most chronic HCV carriers are asymptomatic. When symptoms are present, the most common are fatigue, abdominal pain/discomfort, anorexia and weight loss.

  9. HIV HIVattacksthebody’simmunesystem, weakeningitso that it cannot fight other deadly diseases. AIDS isa fatal disease, andwhiletreatmentforitisimproving, thereis no known cure. TheHIVvirusisveryfragileandwillnotsurvivevery long outside of the human body. It is primarily of concern to employees providing first aid or medical care in situations involving fresh blood or other potentially infectiousmaterials.

  14. Emergencies • Inanemergencysituation,alwaysuseUniversal/StandardPrecautions • Treat all blood or potentially infectious body fluids as iftheyarecontaminated. • Minimizeyourexposurebywearing • Gloves • Splash goggles • Pocketmouth-to-mouthresuscitationmasks • Other barrier devices

  15. IfYouAreExposed: Wash the exposed area thoroughly with soap and running water. Use non-abrasive soap or liquid hand sanitizer for 20 seconds Flush mouth, nose, eyes for 15 minutes if blood is splashed in mucous Report the exposure to your supervisor or building Principal

  16. Gloves Gloves should be made of latex, nitril, rubber, or other waterimperviousmaterials. Do not touch the outside of used gloves

  17. HandWashing Hand washing is one of the most important (and easiest) practices used to prevent transmission of bloodborne pathogens. Usesoapandwater. Donotuseharsh, abrasivesoaps andwashforatleast20seconds(SingtheABC’s) Use paper towels to turn off the water and to also open thebathroomdoor If soap and water are not available, use a waterless hand washing solution.

  18. Body Fluid Spill Clean Up • SpillContainment • Sprinkle necessary absorbent material on spill • SpillCleanUp • Use disposable gloves • Use provided scoop to pick up absorbent material, and place in containment bag. • DecontaminationofArea • Use germicidal cleaning cloth to wipe over entire spill area

  19. Body Fluid Spill Clean Up • DisposalofContaminatedWaste • Dispose of used germicidal cloth and any other contaminated materials (including gloves) into red containment bag. • DoubleBagit
