THE MANDATE OF THE ONTARIO MUNICIPAL WATER ASSOCIATION IS TO ADVOCATE FOR OWNERS AND USERS OF PUBLIC DRINKING-WATER SYSTEMS IT HAS 190 MEMBERS THAT PROVIDE WATER TO > 7,000,000 SOULS IN ONTARIO, 50 MEMBERS OF WHICH ARE FROM NORTHERN ONTARIO THE BOARD OF 11 DIRECTORS IS COMPRISED OF COUNCILLORS, MANAGERS AND CUSTOMER REPRESENTATIVES .

  3. THE NORTH THE NORTH HAS LONG BEEN A STRONG SUPPORTER OF THE ASSOCIATION TWO OF THE CURRENT DIRECTORS ARE FROM THE NORTH THE ASSOCIATION HAS MADE NUMEROUS PRESENTATIONS TO THE PROVINCE REGARDING THE NEED FOR FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO COMMUNITIES THAT HAVE A SMALL WATER SYSTEM CUSTOMER BASE

RESOLUTIONS Financing water operations and maintenance is a challenge for most Northern communities System owners must submit financial plans demonstrating long term financial sustainability Predictable funding is key to these plans being creditable The OMWA will again pass a resolution that the province commit to predictable provincial assistance through the Ontario Small Water Assistance Program (OSWAP).

Staff Recruitment Recruiting and retaining water system operators remains a problem, particularly in remote communities An analysis has shown that careers in the public water supply sector are not popular with high school students that enter community colleges and universities – in part because they are unaware A program to encourage high school students to consider careers in public water supply jointly funded by association, Walkerton Clean Water Centre and the OCWA will be launched in the fall.

  7. Staff Recruitment The OMWA annually awards four $500 bursaries to community college students whose studies are related to public water supply. The high school recruitment initiatives will include cash prizes for videos produced by these students – a special category for small high schools

  8. Drinking Water Leadership Summit October 23rd to 25th Aimed at councilors, clerks, treasures, CAOs and provincial ministries staffs Topics will include financial planning, staff recruiting, standard-of-care, life cycle management and administrative tools. You are encouraged to consider attending the summit as it is aimed at providing those with public water supply leadership responsibilities with the required background to fulfill these responsibilites.

  9. Concluding Remarks The North remains an important element of the OMWA The OMWA has been and will continue to advocate in the interest of the public water supply sector of northern communities. We look forward to seeing some of you at the summit.
