School Reinvention Symposium Washington DC Oct. 26th-29th, 2006
Lessons Learned: 1. Narrow focus - What ONE thing can be accomplished? Reading & writing across all content areas 2. Build a culture of high expectations. Success for 100% of students 3. Make data driven decisions & use current brain research
Lessons Learned: 4. Equipping teachers with the same tool box for dealing with struggling students & coaching support 5. Faculty buy in is key. We must remove things from the plate. 6. Create an accountability plan to sustain change
What research says? • 21st Century Skills that students lack • Current brain research • Our data
20th Century Skills vs. 21st Century Skills - The Difference • Today the CONTENT is only a piece of what our students need to be competitive in the work place. • We need to focus on 21st century skills: * critical thinking * communication and information skills * personal productivity and people skills
Current brain research to consider… Not all students learn the same! Among all learners: 46% are visual 37 % hands on 17 % auditory To reach them all, we need highly visual, hands on and rich in media learning
Our Data! Why we are choosing literacy Reading Proficiency Trends 2004-2005 Iowa Tests (Overall) Special Ed. Free/Reduced Grade 4 82.2% 48.1% 67.9% Grade 8 72.5% 26.8% 59.3% Grade 11 76% 28.6% 53.5%
What we are proposing… • Form a core team to examine and guide the improvement process regarding K-12 literacy • Focus attention on struggling learners and developing a strong co-teaching structure 2. Develop instructional strategies that work well for all students & common expectations for all classes (common writing rubric) 3. Co-teaching is the vehicle to improve all student learning!
Our commitments & hopes B. Faculty buy in is key! 1. Brockton High School Principal presentation to all staff. An example of success & commitment over time 2. Demonstrate commitment to literacy by clearing the teacher plate 3. Send a 6-12 team to the summer model school conference
Our commitments & hopes C. Commitment to on going professional development Literacy! Developing and implementing instructional strategies that work to improve all student learning.
