Update of the legal basis for tourism statistics State-of-affairs • Negotiations in the European Statistical System • Opinion of the ESS Committee on 2nd October 2009 • Interservice consultation of other Commission services took place in December 2009 / January 2010 • First Task Force on implementing measures: March 2010 • Negotiations in the European Institutions • Adoption by the Commission expected by end of March 2010 • Procedure EP and Council in the course of 2010, starting under the Spanish Presidency • First reference year 2011? 2012? Tourism Satellite Accounts • Main conclusions of 2008-2009 Eurostat project • Implementation work has now started in most MS • But: budget and resource constraints • A matter of priority setting for NSIs and policy makers • Four methodological volumes on the project available on-line: http://epp.eurostat.ec.europa.eu/portal/page/portal/tourism/methodology • Report on the implementation of TSA in 27 EU Member States • Comparison of methodology and empirical results • Practical Guide for the Compilation of a TSA: Directory of Good Practices • Possibilities to obtain more up-to-date TSA key figures • Next steps • Voluntary transmission of main TSA figures to Eurostat (ongoing) Advisory Committee on Tourism, Brussels, 12/02/2010  item 4a  Tourism Statistics

UNWTO / EC market intelligence cooperation • Objective • Develop a joint publication (UNWTO, Eurostat, DG ENTR), similar to the brief Eurostat papers (Statistics in Focus, Data in Focus) and to the quarterly UNWTO Barometer • Focus on the European Union: trends in the European tourism market, but also the position in the world • Timetable • First meeting held on 3/12/2009, second meeting (Eurostat/UNWTO) end of March • Draft should be available around summer (2008 data) • Regular publication in September (for the European Tourism Forum, data of previous year) Advisory Committee on Tourism, Brussels, 12/02/2010  item 4a  Tourism Statistics
